GPS Unit question

I am planning on buying a combo unit to use on my pontoon, do not know much about them. So I have a few questions.

    1. Does the unit allready have maps on them that would be good enough to keep me from getting around the lake ie. Chipawa Flowage, Mississipi backwaters.

    2. Thinking of buying the 595C that Wade has posted, any thoughts on this.

    Any help would be appreciated.

That 595C would have a basic basemap without depth contours, but it will still help you get around on any waters you fish by using the trails and the waypoints. It will have a basic outline of lakes and rivers. However, it is compatible with Navionics maps which will give you a lot more detailed information including depth contours. I would suggest trying the unit with the basemap alone and see if you like it like that. If not, then you can always add the Navionics map later.

Also, there was a recent thread about the 595C and it appears that the people using it give it a thumbs up.

The base maps are pretty choppy when looking at an intricate piece of water, like the flowage. I’d consider a map chip. The Navionics chip has the Chippewa Flowage in 1 ft contours, and has the highly detailed shoreline/islands you’ll need to get around. I’ve been up to the flowage several times with my Nav chip and never been disappointed.

The HB that Wade posted is Nav compatible. Unit + chip will be right about $500 with Wade’s free shipping + no sales tax outside of Iowa policy. I say, go for it!
