For some reason I feel that is a loaded question.

I know but I never thought it would be SO lopsided
Were, oh were are the bass guys at
You will have to READ it to them!
Unfortunately I had to compramise my answer. Your question of What species are you go to chase? didn’t have a mermaid option for an answer. After all these years, I still think I’m going to catch one

At my house that would get you checked into the fridge, head bounced off the sink and cupboard and maybe a little rug burn before a winner is decided.
Who won?

Katie won but she does not know that there are 2 Ben and Jerrys containers in the other fridge
I take it Wellman normally gets the last ice cream at your house
You are a mean (But crafty!) Dad!
Wellman left a while ago…I was speaking of my 5 boys and daughter!
I am sorry, I feel left out, because you failed to post my favorite species of fish to fish for.
its the SPOTTED BASS.
and for those who don’t know they are as far north as IOWA( by the DNR STANDARD) and they are in the Mississippi river. and most guys wouldn’t know that they caught one or not..
so I vote for the Spotted bass.
Wow. I guess what they say is right.. People on this site ARE more “common sense” than most!
Good Question Ron,
If you had asked my 2 years ago, I would have definitely said Largemouth.
But this last 2008 season, I’ve caught so many BIG Smallmouth, that I really think this IS my new favorite fish.
Do they hit Frogs,
I still love froggin’
Jack
Glad you like them. Hope you don’t practice CPR ??? Take a few Extra home for the Garden

You lumped catfish together, so I had to go with LM Bass. So why didn’t you just list Bass for LM and SM? Or Pike for walleye and northern? Or panfish instead of Crappie, Sunfish/Bluegill and Perch?
Too be honest, I do not know a lot about fishing for catfish. Can you target each species of catfish specifically and differently?
I missed a few others as well, Spotted bass, Striped Bass, Rock bass, White bass, Yellow bass, Tiger muskie, King salmon, Coho salmon, Pink salmon, Kokanee salmon, Brook trout, Brown trout, Rainbow trout, Lake trout, Tiger trout, Walleye-Sauger Hybrid, Lake whitefish, Burbot. I could list fish that swim in other states besides Mn as well, but then we would need to list ocean species as well. We would not want then to be left out either.
Please do not read to much into me NOT listing your favorite species. I was just wondering what IDO’s favorite fish was. If you look at the species specific forums, one would think that the catfish/ sturgeon guys rule as they have all most 3 times the posts that any other species have.
I guess having BK on your side helps with that though.
Ron
All I’m gonna say is those guys that lurk around at night have a lot of hot air to expel.
but unless you have caught a spot, You really don’t know what you are missing. its just a totally different kind of bass.
and again, THEY ARE AROUND.. but most guys wouldn’t know one if it bit them in the hand..
this was not to be a pain in the butt. But a chance to open guys eyes up to a species that exists in the IDO arena.
they are all over IOWA.. they are ON THE MISSISSIPPI..
guys just need to identify what they caught..

What’s the northernmost pool that you can catch them on? Also, what’s the northernmost lake? I go to Dubuque quite often so if I could find a place not to far from there to try to catch a spot I would….
I voted Walleye – because it is my choice during more times of the year than any other. Pike(with a spear) would be my very close sceond choice.

if you fish the Mississippi or other Iowa rivers, I would bet that you have caught one..
He is painted like a large mouth.. but the jaw doesn’t extend back behind the eye..
and he has a burr on his tongue. some times they have a red eye as well.
the IOWA DNR has a ton of rivers that have a special size limit on the dudes because around here, the species that we have rarely get above 12 to 14 inches..
I have caught them in Alabama that have been over 4 lbs. close to 5 lbs in fact.
but they are around.. if you didn’t know what you caught and really looked at it, you would say its a small, “River” largemouth.. but it isn’t ..
they can, have a forked tail.. or more of a fork, but not always..
its the jaw length that will really be the determination.
and spots have pigment around their belly area.. meaning its not all a light color.. which is how they are known as spotted bass.
I will tell you that I believe that I have caught spots within site of the Dresbach dam.. so that’s pool 8.. There are a bunch of fish on a “certain” wing dam, that to me look and act like spots.. they are almost always the same size.. and they have the afore mentioned characteristics. just remember that within site of the dam is a long ways down stream.. but there is one particular area..
that in my personal belief.. holds spots.. I am not a biologist.. and these fish take on different characteristics depending upon where you go..
there is the Coosa river strain, and there is a Kentucky strain and a Northern strain of spotted bass to my knowledge.
the spotted bass in California came right from the Coosa river strain, so they know why they are so big out there.. that would be lake Perris and Clear lakes..
and lastly, if you believe Ralph Mann’s, he wrote a recent article stated that all the bass came from the Spotted bass, both largemouths and Smallmouths …
meaning that Spots were the beginning of the bass species..
things to consider..
I wish you all well and if you catch one tell us about it..
