my girlfriend has a 3.5 year old son that technically is not mine but might as well be if you know what i mean. we have been together for 2.5 years out of the 3.5 he has been alive. anyways i get to watch him tomorrow and with most the snow being melted on the trails in the woods and a nice day on the way, do you think it would be a ok idea or not to take him out for his first experence out in the great outdoors? i want to but i want to know what everyone else thinks? although final decesion is his moms. darn moms have to ruin all the fun

So you are asking, if you we think you should deny the child of a life learning event?

I think it’s already past the child’s time for a nice walk, the kids been walking for what 2.5 years or so….

It actually seems a bit crazy to me that someone wouldn’t want their child to explore their own world.

Yeah why not take the youngster? Just obviously be cautious.

    ABSOLUTLEY ! (After asking MOM)
Keep it short, entertaining and let him be part of it.Be sure to focus on him while the experience unfolds.

Its a great thing to do. Don’t ask mom if you can take him- tell her your taking him.

Definitely a good idea. Don’t think that you’ll be able to go on a long walk unless you carrying him or have a wagon. Even then, you probably won’t make it very far or for a long time. As others have said, don’t over do it. Its tough to keep a 3.5 year olds interest for a long time. Always be prepared for a melt down too (candy, suckers, or whatever). Nothing worse than getting a mile away from home and having a 3.5 year old trying to break sound records the entire way home. 20 minutes can seem like 8 hours.

In my eyes, this shouldn’t even be a point of discussion. If his father isn’t around and you are raising him as if he was your own, why wouldn’t you take him with…if he wanted to go???

1/2 hour to an hour is all I can expect when I take out my 3 year old… He is always asking to go with the next time though…

I guess I cant see why not, depending on what your idea of experiencing outdoors is. I noticed you said the snows off the trails, are you talking about wheelin? If so, better ask the miss

I take my two year old all the time. He loves it, we take our time, and just pretty much do what he wants to do.

Be ready for the never ending questions about everything.
Daddy, why that tree so big, why no grass there, why dog run so fast…..

It is priceless Daddy – Son time

And blood doesn’t count for much if you are there and spending time with him and treating him right. He will never forget those things.

My daughter will be 2 in a month. all last fall she was in the woods whenever I was checking stands or checking out new places. So much for them to explore and see. As long as you keep it fun she will stay out for hours.

I took my son for a walk in the woods when he was 2 and look what happened when he got older…

Great idea, bring snacks for him, dress him warm, and don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t last that long. He’ll remember it no matter how long it last.

thanks guys, so we went out and about a hour later i asked if he was ready to go home for lunch, his excact words, “no we dont need to eat, were big boys wyatt” haha he is hooked. we ended up staying out just over 2 hours and he started slowing down so without saying anything i just kinda turned us around and next thing i knew we were at the truck. he was sleeping before we even made it 5 miles home
