The ice breaker is actually an ordinary towboat pushing barges. The original icebreaker from years past has been done away with in our area and i believe it is now operating on the great lakes from what i was told. As of this morning the closest north bound tow bound for St Paul was down in pool 15 which was the LJ Sullivan. That still is no gaurantee they will try pushing through the lake when they get that far.All depends on the ice conditions, there is still plenty of ice between Pepin and Lake City but by looking at it on the way home tonite it looks like it is detereorating fast with these warm temps.

Drove by Pepin today and it’s good news…bad news. The ice is pulling away from shore and looks soft. However the upper end of the lake should be ice free by now, but it’s not. I’d guess at least a week before any tows go up.

Any eagles that way? I would think they should start showing up soon?

I heard April 5 to the 7th for the ‘barge breaker’ to go through lake Pepin> Haven’t heard many reports of ice jams down river. This global warming might be real, but this long winter certainly was!

I look for it to go out later than it usually does due to the colder winter temps we had this winter which made for alot thicker ice than we have had for along time. Its ALWAYS great to hear the news of when it goes out.
    Thanks, Bill

The wind and current are taking a toll. A ton of ice went out today. Maybe by Wednesday the lake will be ice free (cross your fingers)

The 1st tow should be in pool 4 in the morning if they don’t pull over on account of the strong winds, update- The Deana Ann was out of lock 4 at 2:50 am

Cool! I’ll have to drive up to La Couplis and look.
