I got roped into going to a work sanctioned social event with Mrs Kolfront Kraig.

We are having a dispute about what semi formal is.

I guess I have to shave my awesome neck beard and not have white sock showing with black shoes…insert mouth harp and banjo music hear…

Semi-formal, if I’m not mistaken, means a suit jacket and shorts. Bolo tie optional.

I’m pretty sure semi-formal means wearing a shirt with some sort of sleeves, and pants that don’t have holes in them. It also depends on which state you’re in.

In MN Semi-Formal means wearing Mossy Oak instead of RealTree. In WI, it means wearing your Packer Polo instead of your ratty old wife beater. In IA it means wearing your teeth and crimping your mullet.

I could go on and on.

If it’s anything like ones I’ve had to attend…Make sure you come only semi-hungry as they will likely only serve a semi-meal with fancy food that you only semi-recognize…

I think your attire is the least of your concerns…

No reason to argue with her about semi formal.

Just do like I do………chew up some crackers and hold a little vegetable soup in your mouth, walk past her and throw it up. Let her know you are starting to get the chills and you think you should stay home.

When she leaves you have the house to yourself….its a win, win for you both

Clam Chowder and Mushroom soup are other good choices

    Kraig:

In this case, I think formal means tux… So here is my take on semi-formal:

I would dress like the other guys for my own pleasure, but for your wife’s I would say that you are likely to have to start with a coat and tie to be safe. Then once you’re past the meal (not much food is right), then take off the tie and coat. If you get there and find that you are over dressed, IMMEDIATELY DISROBE TIL YOU’RE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!

I agree 100% hairjig. Our women put up with alot of our crazy crap so if it will make her happy I would go and try to look interested. I guess if the truth be known we are just eye candy

I’d go with this route. Really sell the throw up though.

At one point “formal” meant white-tie and ball gown, and “semi-formal” meant black tie and evening gown. But these days most people use “formal” for black-tie and evening gown because true formal events are extremely rare.

So semi-formal is kicked down a notch, too: a suit and tie for you, and a cocktail dress for her. That’s a suit, not a jacket and tie, though I bet you wouldn’t be the only one wearing a sportcoat if it’s all you’ve got. And a dark suit: black, charcoal, or maybe dark navy.

Her dress should be knee length (or maybe just a tiny bit shorter, if she wants to be daring) or almost ankle length, but not full ball-gown length. It can be fairly tight-fitting and show some skin, if she likes. And the color can be catchy; red is perfectly fine if she can pull it off. If she hasn’t got that, nice business wear or her nicest blouse-and-skirt will do.

Remember now this is all free advise. And by no means am I correct in making most of my decisions. My answer to the Princess would be to please pick somthing out for me to wear to the event on Friday night honey. That way you can’t possibly go wrong and o by the way let’s not stay too late cuz the I promised the boys we’d leave by 6 for a little fishin on Saturday…

Now that would impress her boss and coworkers!

Its her work and she works at a law firm.

Mrs. Koldfront thinks a long sleeve shirt and a sweater would be good enough.

    I was thinking suit.

    Sweater it is…

if your lucky enough to get away with just a sweater don’t make any waves and go for it. save the money from the suit and spend it on fishing tackle. you can never have to many colors of ring worms and jig heads. i think dean can sell you a new St Croix rod for the same price as a new sport coat.

You may end up looking like a bum in a sweater. Like the guy that wears jeans to a wedding. Since its your wife’s employer and a law firm to boot you may be better off going to Men’s Warehouse and going with their advice. Spendy, yes, but think how much your better half would appreciate it. At least have your wife do some snooping around the office and find out what the other guys are wearing.

If she say’s sweater, impress her with a sport coat & dockers. and be thankful she’s not asking you to wear a tie.
