Dean Ross AKA “The Dinosaur” passed away this afternoon after a long battle with cancer. He was surounded by some friends and family and went without pain. I was told he was very peacefull. I went to see him on wednesday and had a chance to say goodbye. Funeral services will more than likely be mid week. Whether it be fishing, mechanics, construction or just general knowledge I learned alot from him. If I catch half the walleyes he has in his lifetime I will be pretty succesfull. His love of fishing and IDO really meant alot to him. He would always talk about the trips he has taken or the friends he has made because of this site. He will be missed. If anyone has pictures they would like to share of him please reply to this post.

RIP dad, you will be truely missed.

When he was at the home they had a musician come in every other week. He requested this song. It must have really meant something to him. They played it on wednseday also.

Sorry to hear of your loss. He is in God’s gracious hands now.

As we age we discover that the things that are important are much different then in our youth. Family is something we all have, and something we all need. Say I love you tonight to those who are special to you.

    You are in our prayers.

    James, Mary and Christy,
words cannot begin to express my feelings right now. I am very sorry. I will miss him. He was so much more than just my brother, He was my best friend. i have a lifetime of memories of Deano and i truly cherish them all. If i could write out all of our adventures that we shared the book would be as thick as War and Peace I wont be able to fish , hunt , watch hockey, listen to Pink Floyd without thinking of him, This last year has been so hard on everyone that knew Dean and knew of his love of the outdoors. Its safe to say that just about every thing that i know about fishing i know because of Him My Prayers are with you and your family and with dean. I know he is finally healed and either making plans for a fishing trip with the apostles or cruising the rafters of the x and watching the games. My comfort is in the fact that i had so many great times with him and that i can talk about them with anyone who will listen. He helped me catch my first Lake Mille Lacs walleye and i am very glad that i was able to help him catch his last Mille Lacs walleye ( and dandy 27 i might add) I am always here for you so please dont hesitate to call.
    P. S. to Jon , That picture says it all Big fish big smile , that is how i will remember him

You mentioning Pink Floyd if funny. He had tapes that he had made off of his albums from back in the day. Every weekend on out trips to the cabin we would listen to those tapes along with Steely Dan. I was probably the first ten year old who could sing every word of Floyd and Steely Dan. Those were some great times.

I’m so sorry to hear about this. I really regret not getting to know Dean better…we’re both SSP guys and we both had cancer, and Lord knows he could have taught me a lot about Walleyes! I had a chance to talk to him at the “Relay for Life” Cancer Walk a couple of years ago. We had a great talk about fishing, Mille Lacs, a bunch of stuff.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

    Subject: Why We Fish 2/28/02

    Quote:

My father grew up close to Big Stone lake so it was something he did and as soon as I was old enough to hold a rod I was taken with. My mother’s parents owned a cabin on a nice fishing lake so I was exposed from both sides. I still remember my first bass I caught off the dock. My father had given me a red/white Bass-O-Reno(sp?) and told me to cast toward the weeds. Even he was surprised that I caught it.

Fishing became my favorite hobby and remains the same today.

Now for a favorite quote from Herbert Hoover:
“Fishing is the chance to wash ones soul with pure air. It brings meekness and inspiration , reduces our egotism , soothes our troubles and shames our wickedness.” This hangs over my desk at work. Beneath it is another sign that reads: Definition: boat (bot) , n.- a hole in the water into which money is thrown.

    James,

I’m sorry to her about the loss of your father. I first met Dean several years ago at… you guessed it… the 494 ramp one late, winter morning. He came down without his little winter boat just to check out the conditions while I was launching. I recognized him from this site and invited him to join me. He ran home to get his stuff and was back in a bit and we went up to the airport and caught some nice saugers. I remember one other day we had to break through some ice by to train bridge to get to the airport.

Your father always spoke highly of you and your sister. I could tell he was very proud of both or you.

My sympathies go out to you and your family.

Digging through a bunch of pictures. Couple Jump out. The first one is a shot at Milly. Late Oct morning. Sunday AM after a night of fall trolling in the cold and snow. Pulling the boat for the last time that year. That’s Dean walking to the boat after backing the trailer in. I’m heading down to help out.

Next one is a sunset from “The Spot”. A great little spot to anchor up and fish right out from Dino’s cabin on Big Point. (That’s Big Point on the right) Yea, yea, yea, that has to be Shaws reef. Ok, ….. still talking about the spot on the spot on the spot!!!

    Miss ya Dino…

Dino was a great friend and an inspiration to me. Dean and I each had kidney cancer, and his advice got me through some pretty tough times. I will miss seeing that big ‘ol bear at the fish fries up north…I know he will be smiling down on us all on opener. I think he and hook will be pointing at us all and laughing because “We” are not on the right spots!

Maybe he and Hook can work together and keep JJ’s boat upright.
