Just wondering if there are any members that have had Onstar for a while.
How much if at all have you used it???
Got a 3 month trial and just wondering if I want to extend it or not.

Let mine run out on my wife’s Saturn Vue and will let mine run out on my New Impalla SS I got about a month ago, I do not think it is worth another monthly bill. I have a cell phone and I have a spare key in my wallet. Just my .02

Ihave used the basic plan for several years. And have had the following experiences: Ran out of gas, helped quickly. Flat tire just out side of Denver, had to wait 2 hours for help. It was cold, rainy and figured I’d wait (was on my way to Calif.) Flat tire in Nebraska on a barren Hwy (interstate) they could not locate anyone to fix it until morning. I fixed it. By the way, onstar phones or service don’t work northeast of Souix lookout in Canada. It’s been handy to have in many cases when you need it. On the other hand my vehicle insurance will do about the same but won’t get done as quick. FYI

I’ve got it on my truck and my wifes Equinox. For us, we both spend a lot of time on the road and I wouldn’t travel without it (She drives 1 1/2 hrs. each way to work). My wife is not mechanically inclined and it takes the worry out of that.

Also, I spend a lot of time on the river hunting and fishing. I don’t get cell reception in most of the places I go, so along with the obvious driving issues, they can find my truck if I get stranded in the boat or am hanging from my treestand. And for those who don’t think you can hang from your treestand, ask my buddy who did it all day once until I came looking for him. Not fun. Part of the fun of putting up stands in the dark on public land.

Had it but never used it on either of our vehicles. We have roadside assistance if needed.

A guy that lives down the road from me had it on his wifes car. She was on her way home from a little party at the neighbors and hit a deer and the ditch, she was able to get out of the ditch and drive home. Ten minutes later the cops showed up and arrested her for DUI and leaving the scene.

In my mind, the less tracking devices on my vehicle the better. On-Star works for “Big Brother”, in case you didn’t know that…just one more way for them to know where and what you are doing at all times. If I need help I will send up a smoke signal, thanks but no On-Star for me.

We have OnStar on our truck and have used it a couple of times. I will keep it as my wife drives the truck the most and it is cheap insurance if there is any trouble and we use the phone quite abit as well. It costs about $12 a month. Good Luck! 690reece

mccrty_ryn, how did OnStar contribute to her getting a DUI? If she had called into OnStar, and a tow truck showed up to pull her out, the tow driver most likely called it in.

Chevy claims the new vehicles have crash sensors on them that autoreport to Onstar. However, I gotta believe they would call the driver to see if they were OK before dispatching the police….

From my experience with them, the airbags need to deploy, then OnStar will call you.

That’s the point though, they will call you…not call the police and send them to cite you for DUI. No offense, but I don’t believe the story above.

When on star calls your vehicle and you don’t want to hear what they have to say, all you need to do is turn the volume on the radio all the way down.

Now, in a case where on star believes there is a crash and the driver is not able to respond, they may very well call the police. That is true whether you subscribe or not.

Also, all ODB data can be subpoenaed by the courts. So, in a crash, your speed, braking, and any other data on your black box can be used in court against you.

It’s definately big brother stuff on the newer vehicles. I personally hate it!

I have on star on my truck and on the wifes suv. I wouldn’t be without it. When i rolled my truck 3 years ago they sent help. My cell flew out the window as well as the wifes cell. I have locked my keys in the truck a few times the last on 8 mile on the big pond. On star unlocked the truck with a phone call. To me it is well worth the money.

1 year trial is just expiring. Not going to renew it monthly. Even bought extra phone minutes, and haven’t used them. Used the turn by turn directions one time and that did not go so well.

Believe it or not it happened. They definitely know if you are involved in a collision and anyone with knowledge of a collision is required to inform the authorities unless they are positive or have reason to believe they have already been contacted. That is what they told him when he called to cancel it. Its a CYA thing.

Try calling On Star looking for direction while on a frozen lake sometime…it’s a HOOT!

I remember the first time I encountered it. It was at the brother-in-laws in Farmington MN. He wanted to show me how it worked, so he hit the button and asked them where the nearest liquor store was. She tried to send us to ST CLOUD ,MN to the nearest liquor store ???? This was right when it came out, probably more than 7 years ago, so hopefully they got better. Anyways, he told her no thanks and we went to the liquor store right down the road on Pilot Knob….

Jon, I’m not sure if OnStar tracks your speed, brake percentage, steering etc. As far as I know, OnStar gets a signal when your SES light comes on, and when the airbag deploys; that is the only info they track. With all the subscribers they have, and all the free trial offers, that would seem like A LOT of data they would need to store.
I very well could be wrong, and if so, I can say I learned something today.

The blak box (On board Computer) stores the data. I was just pointing out that between OS and the BB, the police can piece together exactly what is going on in your car at the time of any accident and use that information against you in court.
