Computer guys, going from USB 1.1 to 2.0

I have a Laptop, Compaq Presario 2100US and every modern device I plug into my USB ports seems to trigger the warning about everything operating faster using a 2.0 USB port. How can I accomplich this upgrade, I understand it is hardware. Is there something I can get that plugs into the card slot on the side of my PC that will accommodate USB 2.0?

I believe not having the USB 2.0 is preventing me from accessing information on an external hard drive and glitches my Verizon wireless internet that utilizes a USB port. Both of those components start the performance warning of not having a USB 2.0 when plugged in.

    Thanks Guys,
    Jason

I get that message every time I plug my USB memory stick into my computer. So far I’ve been able to save to it and read things back from it with no problem.

    I did find this:

    web page

Maybe that will help you. They don’t flat out say you won’t have any problems using a USB 2.0 device in a USB 1.1 port (other than it’s slower) but they hint that it might not work. That’s all I know…..

your only options with a laptop are –

    1. replace the system board. (probably not going to happen)
    2. install a USB 2.0 card in the PCMCIA slot. you should be able to pick one up for cheap.

but, before you go spending the money on that, i would test those devices on a USB 2.0 machine to see if it is really the cause of the “gliches”, cause that type of stuff is usually pretty unlikely.

here’s a pcmcia card from best buy

personally, i would check ebay first, probably can get one on there for 5 or 10 bucks.

I went through this when I swapped out for a new computer. Most devices can work backwards – meaning they are 2.0 but can slow down to 1.0 or 1.1 I bought an external hard drive to dump files on from my old computer and learned that it did not work backwards. I had to buy a USB 2.0 card for the computer and then went through heck trying to find a compatable driver for it. If your laptop offers a simple upgrade, I would take advantage of it. Aging equipment is difficult to work with after it is obsolete.

Randy that is exactly what I am battling. Trying to recover off of a hard drive back to my PC. Some of it worked fine, but some if has not. It doesn’t seem consistent either.

    Perch_44,

I am going to ask a buddy if I can attempt to read the hard drive from his PC first.

I just looked at those pcmcia cards and think I could do better price wise on a website like newegg.

I think I would still like to do the upgrade, if I could call it that. Probably for less than the price of a new muskie lure.

    Thanks,
    Jason

I bought one of the “My Book” external drives that was about 600Gig for around a hundred bucks. I did all the screwing around to get the 2.0 USB card going in my old Compaq. Once it worked, I have to admit it was slick. Just clicked and dragged file after file of documents and pics onto the new drive. When I was done, plugged it into the new puter, and left it there as another drive. I can’t even begin to describe how many thousands of pics I have on there, and still have plenty of room.

The a pc card is the way to go, that’s what they are there for.

Do you have another computer, a desktop? Probably easier and cheaper to pull the HD out of the laptop and transfer the Data that way, should be easy and cheap, you need a couple parts, a computer store should have what you need or online. I’ve done that in the past worked great.
