Ok, I’m pretty adept at troubleshooting computers, but this one has me. Came home Saturday, McAfee ran it’s scheduled scan, found 4 trojan horses, which we promptly took care of. Ran the scan again for good measure, went out to pick up our son, and my 10 yo daughter used the computer and stopped the scan. No biggee right!

Came home yesterday fired up the computer…no network services to be found. Went to run McAfee again…nope, banner opened, then closed. Tried system restore…nope…won’t do that either. AdAware..nope.

    Called McAfee…typical runaround…they can’t troubleshoot without internet connection, which I don’t have. I can’t uninstall and reinstall as I purchased McAfee online/download, so I don’t have a backup cd.

Thoughts guys? Do I need to take this in to a techie? Seems like a waste with my warrantee still on my McAfee (for 2 more weeks anyway)

Any advice is appreciated…Problem is, my wife and I are starting a new venture, and this computer is essential….right now.

If it’s the same virus we got here last week, you will be formating and staring over. It was a dandy.

Try to download malware bytes and run in safe mode. Good luck!!

    Kooty is right on track.

DONT format your hard drive just yet.

    1) Goto a friends house with a CD-R or a memory stick and download Malware Bytes on it. Or better yet do it aw work.

    2) Install software at home.

    3) I would run a quick scan first and problem should go away. If not restart PC and hold F8 down to enter safe mode(XP). No run Malware Bytes again in through(spelled wrong) mode.

Viruses now a days a real pain in the arse, especialy with kids clicking away on the net.

You using wired or wireless? To start out, See what shows when you do this: Go to Start, Settings, Network connections. What does it show? Does it show Local Area Connection? If it does click on this. Under the genral tab does it have numbers under packets sent and received?

Do you have the My Computer icon on the desktop? Right click on it and select properties, select hardware tab, click Device Manager, and click the + sign near Network Adapters. This will expand and show all the adapters. Are there any ! in front of the devices? Click once on the devices, the right click and select properites. Under Device Status does it say the device is working properly? Do you have a router and a DSL modem, or just a modem? Do you know the IP Address of them? If so click start, run, then type in cmd. enter in ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX where the X’s is the IP Address of the router and or modem. Any luck?

Did your computer show an error that said no network services found?

Are you even getting an IP addy? If you go to a command prompt and to an IP config, what address do you get?? Anything but 167.xxx.xxx.xxx is good. Can you ping your gateway??

I would also download SuperAntispyware. It found a file that was responsible for shutting down most of the other common malware detectors such as AdAware. It has been a couple of years since I worked on this computer, but what is happening to yours sounds similar. I also needed a program called Killbox to delete this file as it would be regenerated if you tried to delete it the normal way. Another program that is supposed to be good for Trojans is A Squared.

    No, says 0.000.00.000 or whatever

not sure how to ping the gateway..working on it now…put the mal program on flash drive, won’t go on in safe mode, so going to try putting it on regularly, then going to safe mode

Does a CD still work in the infected laptop? If so, put the programs on a burned CD.

Does the PC actually give you an error that says no network services to be found? What exactly is the error message?

The forums here usually can get you through it:

Sorry, didn’t read all posts but this is where I go and I’ve had some nasties, and they have a virus protection suggestion area that is really good and full of freeware that you can trust.

Assuming nothing has worked, the Hijack This section at the above mentioned website would be the next step. That program nay also be blocked by whatever you have. Hijack This gives you a log of what programs are running on your system. You then post this log to a website where people who know what they are doing can tell you what may be infecting your system. You can then try to turn off these issues with the program which may not work due to regeneration. Knowing what you have, you may also be able to find another cure. Turning off the wrong things can mess up your system more than it is already so be cautious.
