I was wondering what peoples preference are on using snaps with crankbaits whether its casting windams or trolling. If you use them what size of snaps do you use. I have never used them but was thinking about trying them this year. I shouldnt say i never use them i do use #2 snaps on bladebaits.

I personally like to use a #2 or #3 duo lock snap. The wire has a (rounded) configuration so that the lure has freedom of movement, while at the same time offering ease of switching to a different bait. Hope this sheds some light.
February 16, 2009 at 11:19 am #748903I always remove the split ring and use a snap instead.
Split rings cause to many problems. If they don’t sit in the eye of the lure just right, they can cause the lure to run left or right. Tuning a lure to run true, and keeping it running true, is easier to do with snaps.Split rings can also be a problem when using superlines. To often, and usually at the worst time, you can end up with you line going into the split ring. Thats always a pain in the butt!
February 16, 2009 at 1:08 pm #748911Have always used crosslock snaps but last fall I did some
experimenting. Wanting to get as clean as possible leading
to my cranks I started using solid quick snaps.
They are still round enough to not interfere with the
action (5-7 jsr). Was also worried that they could open up
a little resulting in lost cranks……not a problem. Not
quite as easy to change out as you’ll need a needle nose
but generally speaking they passed the test.
The quick snaps will not get caught on the line
occasionally either keeping your leader fray free. Crosslox
will still be used but THESE are a little cleaner.
Work very well for jigs too
February 16, 2009 at 1:47 pm #748917I have been using Norman Speed Clips. I like them so much I now use them ice fishing.
Dream’nFebruary 16, 2009 at 5:15 pm #749037I have always used #2 Duo Lock Snaps, the same ones I use for my blade baits. Never had any major issues with cranks running true or line tangles. Using fireline that is.
February 16, 2009 at 5:45 pm #749048do most of you use snaps, or just tie directly to the jig/crank?

Snaps for blades, cranks.
Tie direct for most other applications.
February 16, 2009 at 10:47 pm #749142How you guys doing. I use cross locks for my snaps. And for a long time when casting cranks and changing up colors alot I always left the split ring on the bait. Then I started having trouble with the bait running true. I’ve now switched all my cranks over to the oval split rings. The same ones that come on the Japanese made baits. And eliminated my problems.
GlennFebruary 17, 2009 at 9:00 am #749352With cranks, if I’m trolling, I’ll just use a crosslock. If I’m tossing cranks, I’ll use one of my ‘homemade’ snaps, which consists of a crane swivel put into a Norman speed clip.
February 17, 2009 at 9:15 am #749353I use a #2 – #3 cross lock snap to the split ring on most crankbaits. I have however come across a few cranks through trial and error that just run better without the split ring and in those instances I remove the split ring and go directly to the eyelet with the cross lock.
As for jigs… tie direct.
