On hunt for Big Fish, Larry Dalhberg was using a saltwater flats boat for muskies.. it was 24 foot long, had a big motor on the back.. he said more HP then his Suburban, but cost $14,000 LESS then a muskie or walleye boat.. plus with the shallow draw, he showed that he could go places that a big “muskie boat” couldn’t go.. it seemed very dry in the conditions that he fished in.. and was RIGHT ON THE WATER..

just because you have never seen something doesn’t mean that it won’t work in your area..

I think that this was a real breakthrough for guys to think about.

he talked about using KITES for muskies as well..

but the big thing, I took, beside the homemade bait that he made in a day and caught muskies with immediately, was this flat’s boat.

if they are strong enough for the OCEAN, they should be strong enough for any lake or river that you or I fish…

Sure do like his shows. He seems to take a different approach to them. Its interesting to see him doing more shows from the area.

As much as I enjoy watching him travel the world catching huge, unusual fish, I really enjoy those episodes in his basement making baits. Heck, I’m just blown away by all the stuff he has in his basement! That was pretty cool how he whips up a new bait to use and then to tell Hoppe that he will give him the mold.

Did they look like these. Down here by Corpus Christi they call theses “Bay Boats”. Some of them don’t even have any sides, just a bottom. I guess the guys get use to not putting any thing on the deck that can roll off. You’ll see these things running in areas I doubt have 12″ of water but with the Laguna Madre only being 4 to 6 feet deep except for the ship channels, the waves never get that tall even in high winds.
I took these a while back to post thinking the river rats would love some thing like this.

I know of two guys in the Brainerd area that run Flats boats.
My dad has been talking about getting one for the last few years. I have ridden in the 24 footer Ranger makes, it could handle any waves that we get in the midwest

Larry kind of answered your observation today. He was on his way to Tanzania and the plan tickets went from 2k to 5k, which I guess comes right out of his own pocket. So instead he was on Pool 2 with the Griz…

Those flats boats are not for people with bad knees or backs. Note the flat bottom and no seats in the boat. One must stand when going from point A to B and let your knees absorb the shock on every wave or swell — although tourney fishermen may find that better than sitting.

Did you catch a recent “basement” episode where he described what was to happen to him in his will??? This is how much the guy loves to fish and how much he respects his passion. The instructions were that he was to be cremated, and then his ashes were to be used in a lure mold. Once the mold was complete and the lure painted per colors HE SPECIFIED in his will, the lure was to be fished. When the lure hooked into a fish, the line was to be cut, allowing the fish to take the lure with it…..now that is some serious passion for this great sport!!!!….

His show last night after the muskie episode sure was cool. Tossing hunks of meat into a pond in the jungle to pull out a 30-40lb monster fish.
