I was forced to put my hunting and our family dog down to rest last night. My buddy of 11 years suffered a tumor ruptering on his spleen with major internal bleeding last night. Despite a midnight run to the vets he was considered too weak to have survived any kind of surgery and with only few hours left we did what we thought old harley boy deserved and that was to go peacefully. It hurts. It hurts. It hurts. a tearfull goodbye ole buddy!

One of the toughest things I’ve ever had to do also! I’m feeling your pain. Just imagine the game full fields he’ll be running through….
February 13, 2009 at 9:33 pm #748146Very sorry to hear that.
You did the right thing ,the very thing that all dog owners dread to think about. 11 years, I’ll bet the memories will be remarkable.
February 13, 2009 at 9:38 pm #748149I have a hard time even responding to these posts…
If you ever find someone that loves you as much as your dog…don’t ever let them go!jldiiPosts: 2294February 13, 2009 at 9:43 pm #748152It isn’t easy. I’ve got 4 collars hanging on hooks in front of me.
I feel your pain.
February 13, 2009 at 9:43 pm #748153It is the toughest part of being a responsible dog lover. I’m sorry to hear of your loss.
February 13, 2009 at 9:51 pm #748162After that last tear is shed, after that last sob is uttered, your grief will be repaced with those happy times you had with your buddy. A tear was shed for your buddy today at my house and for the buddies I have lost. Good luck my friend.
February 13, 2009 at 10:05 pm #748165I rocked my GWH overnight while she was dying from kidney failure, best dog and friend I ever had. I recall my neighbor getting home from night shift as the wife and I were heading for the clinic for you know what in the morning, I looked at him and he knew what was up as I was a mess. Thoughts are with you, that’s a tough time for sure. Never forget the one you had, and take a break for a while before you get another would be my advice, heal.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

February 13, 2009 at 10:18 pm #748169Hey bud…. I can truly say I know what you are going through. I put one dog down in January of last year pretty much due to old age (she was almost 13) and then about the time I was beginning to think more about the one I had left, She was diagnosed with cancer and the vet said it would be two weeks tops. Four days later I put her down. You won’t believe it right now, but the hurt does get better. You will never forget (I just shed a tear this past weekend while I was at a place we used to go and memories came flooding in!) but the memories turn into good ones. You will forget the tough time you just went through, and instead will remember that first bird, or the romps in the field, or just the image of him/her laying on the floor next to you…all the good ones!
Prayers sent for your bud, and also for you and your family.
Take care,

They go anywhere and do anything we want. Hunting partners, fishing partners, riding shotgun in the truck just enjoying life because they are with you.
This is for all who have dogs in their family- be there till the end. Hold them and pet them until the end.
Sorry about your loss, as I sit back with a sad feeling for you.February 13, 2009 at 11:07 pm #748187Sorry to hear that , I feel for you, we had to bring Sadee in 3 years ago about this time of the year, 13 great years, it was a tough couple weeks.

February 14, 2009 at 12:13 am #748215From our family to yours a heart felt sorry. We had to put our 10 yr old lab down due to overwhelming cancer. Hang in there and fall back on all the wonderful memories your pup has given you over the years. The length of time we have with our dogs pales in comparison to the impact they have on our hearts. May he hunt on forever!!!
February 14, 2009 at 12:30 am #748222Those old dogs give a person all they got and then some. God has a lot of them up there, I’m sure he’ll be waiting for you, ready for the next hunt.
February 14, 2009 at 2:07 am #748254Man I am so sorry about your dog. They live everyday of their life just trying to do the best they can do aiming to please. I hope things brighten up.
February 14, 2009 at 2:48 am #748260I feel your loss also. I had to have my 13 yr. old lab put down 5 yrs. ago. It still hurts. . I play with my son and brother’s labs but haven’t been comfortable getting another one. I know she went to Rainbow Bridge as I will eventually.
perchprincessPosts: 17February 14, 2009 at 2:59 am #748263I am truly sorry and just like everyone else I feel your pain. We just had to put our 7 year old Chessie down with lymphoma. Its only been two weeks. I struggled that day and my heart broke. I struggled with the decision and friend sent me the Pet’s 10 commandments, I won’t type them all out, but I’ll give you two of them:
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too wil grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there. You have your friends, your work, your entertainment, but I only have you.
It is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but the good outweighs everything. Their loyalty their love, will never be replaced.
February 14, 2009 at 3:59 am #748275Whatever you do, do NOT see the movie Marley and me…while it may be a good movie, for anyone who has held their friend, stroking their ear until their final breath is let out….the movie brought back too many memories…..great movie, but man, I struggled with the end….let’s just say I’m glad the theatre stayed dark for a bit
Time heals all wounds……ummm..BS…put my chessie down 8 years ago…still hurts and my golden is now 8 and moving slower each day…I will obey #10 commandment…never thought I would again…but you are right…all they have is me, I will not let them go alone
February 14, 2009 at 5:15 pm #748434I have lost two “sons” over the past 30 years.. and it takes a lot of time to heal..
I wish you well..
