Do people understand that even though he retires he’s still property of the team he retired from until his contract is up?

There is zero chance of Favre being a Viking this season.

I hope it doesn’t happen, but all the Jets have to do is release him and he can sign anywhere he wants. With the salary cap relief the Jets are getting I am sure he would get his release if he asks.

Well ofcourse a free agent can sign any where they want but he’s not a free agent. Until he’s released he’s a Jet, I doubt they’ll release him because if he does decide to play somewhere else they can get something for him, or he could come back to be a Jet.

The Jets QB situation is almost as bad as the Vikes now lol

there is a forum called PRO FOOTBALL TALK, that says that Favre is angling to get his release.. so THAT HE CAN PLAY FOR THE VIKINGS.

I put a lot of credibility in that site as its been on the money about 90% of the time. maybe more.

now it may not happen.. but I really believe that it will.

And his first pick will go to Sharper when he goes back to Green Bay

Sadly his 80 year old body is much better than anything the vikes have right now. But, like others have said, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I think the NFL pays him to retire so they have something to talk about until the combine starts in a few weeks.

I really wish Favre would just go away and stay gone. At this point he isn’t doing himself, his career, or the league much good anymore. It was good while it lasted, but it’s time.

Besides, if the Vikings did pick him up, I’d puke up every drop of purple koolaid I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking. I DO NOT WANT HIM!

Actually if the Jets release him he’s a free agent and can sign with anybody.

NO one complained when he brought the Jets to 8-3…with no one you ever heard of for a supporting cast. Who do the Vikes have that can even carry his jockstrap? GRAY IS THE WAY!!!!!

I sure hope and truly thought we would be a Viking but the bicep injury is going to be the determining factor I would guess.

But there’s still hope for the legend to come to Purple-ville.

    Go Farve we need ya!

There is no incentive for the Jets to simply release him.

Before last year, I never wanted to see him play for the Vikings. After last year, I’d personally drive down to Mississippi and pick him up and drop him off at the Vikings training camp. Is he better than Jackson? Maybe, maybe not. I wouldn’t want either of them as my starting QB next year.

    Doubleshot,
I disagree with your statement. The statement below is from ESPNs website. I’d consider this a good reason to realease him. Along with the fact that his former teammates openly criticized him after last season.

Favre’s retirement will save the Jets his $13 million salary in salary cap space. The Jets are in one of the worst salary-cap situtations in the NFL.

Isn’t there some kind of verbage in the terms, if the JETS release him early, they give the Pack all kinds of ridiculous first and second round draft picks for a few years ???? Oh no, its Herschel Walker again….

From what I hear… NO. Only if they trade him to another team.

Thanks, actually just found that too. If they trade him to the NFC… see below.

Favre is now 39, and extended his streak of 269 consecutive games started only by playing through myriad injuries as the Jets’ season wore on. The enthusiasm he had to return last year may have been dampened by the aches and pains he experienced in the past season.

But would Favre change his mind for a chance to play for the Vikings, against the Packers in the NFC North.

The Jets own his rights and would need to release him for Favre to join the Vikings. A trade is not an option because there are penalties attached to the Packers’ trade with the Jets that would net significant compensation for Green Bay if New York traded Favre into the NFC North.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said Favre did not ask for his release and he wouldn’t delve into specifics about what he discussed with Cook, Favre’s agent.

    BZZSAW –
You have a point, I agree. I was thinking along the lines that they would rather keep him since their QB situation is worse than the Vikings ……….or that they woudl trade him to another team that didn’t produce penalty

Definitely a tough call for the Jets. If he wasn’t hurt I think he would have been back with the Jets for sure.

So he “favor” takes a year off and comes back healthy next season and we “vikes” win the Super bowl!
