It could be that time of the month….

I would think that the big females would be piling on the weight to get ready for the spawn coming shortly. Has he moved around the lake and noticed this everywhere?

Could be he is in an area that the males are staging for the spawn, even though it is a couple months away still. I know if i was going to get to “spawn” with plenty of females, i’d be staging for it way early too!

Can I ask how your friend is determining the sex.
I have heard from many biologists that it is a very difficult thing to determine.

It’s possible that the females have a different food source that might be richer that they are feeding on and not holding in the same areas that the males are.

I know some people are catching lots of nice females on a ceratin lake I will not name right now in less than 10 feet. They aren’t catching any slots, just biggies. The slots are all out deeper.

Its part of the pre-spawn ritual that they will “pack” in this fashion in preperation of the spring spawn. It will be more/less noticeable depending on the specific lake, river, etc.
