I make wood baits myself but have no skill painting. I have a few specific and unique colors that I want some of my baits painted. Does anyone know where in Minnesota I can have them custom painted?

January 21, 2009 at 4:00 pm #739812Post some pics when you get them finished. I love seeing them, it’s art as far as I’m concerned.

Jim does a great job and he is quick
I agree! He’s painted a few custom batches for me. He does a nice job, and priced right! I have about 20 HJ’s that will be sent out to him soon, the trebles are removed and they’re in the envelope ready to go, just need to decide which colors I’m going with??

January 21, 2009 at 9:57 pm #739977I get rapalas painted by Hutch and he does a great job. He also has all hand line and jigs that you would want.
January 21, 2009 at 10:03 pm #739982I’ve used Jim at Downriver also. Very happy with the finished product and the price was right.
January 22, 2009 at 4:42 pm #740337Completely off topic, but I just got to thinking about it.
When you watch American Chopper and other shows like that, I don’t think the guys that do the painting get enough credit. To me, they’re every bit, if not more, important to the final outcome of the bike, car, etc… than the guys that design and build them. Those guys are incredibly talented and true artists.
Paint is a HUGE factor in the way things look, and I don’t think making lures is any different.

There’s this….https://www.in-depthoutdoors.com/community/groups/jig-casting-and-plastic-injection-1288634266/
Currently there are no painters found in this group but any would certainly be welcome should they want to add to the conversations.
I do some air brushing on jigs but haven’t tried anything larger and honestly I don’t feel comfortable with air brushing enough yet that I’d try for someone else. Maybe someday.

As sauger suggested in his post….”practice make perfect…or somewhat” Air brushing is largely learning when to turn the air pressure up for a certain paint or when to thin a paint. Today’s airbrushes are fine-tuned machines. Coupled with low pressure compressors and compatible regulators/filters and the air-brush-ready paints available and the learning curve is a fairly quick one.
Eric….you can seal the wood using CS sealcoat, a water-based product that dries clear and hard as rocks. This it down with tap water and brush it on and allow to dry, then lightly scuff the whiskering off with some 600 grade water or dry sandpaper and re-seal. Get an air brush set up and some acrylic colors and go for it. Done in this fashion you can wash any acrylic paint off if you aren’t happy with the finish. When you have a finish that makes you happy, give the bait a full dip in the CS sealer as a cover coat, let dry hard and go catch fish.
You say you have no painting skills….but how do you know if you don’t try.

June 24, 2017 at 12:11 pm #1700710Oh I wasn’t poking anybody. Knowledge is timeless. I just find it interesting how far back some people go, 2009 is a while ago.
