First timer on this site. From what I can tell there appears to be a wealth of knowledge and experience to go around. Here is my question to any of you that can help. I’m looking to get a fixed mount(no handhelds) gps(5″-7″ screen) for my boat. Being an experienced fisherman, but having very little experience with gps, I’m wondering what unit I should buy? I would like to stay under $700 if possible, and I’m not interested in a combo unit.

I fish primarily S.Wi waters, and spend quite a bit of time also on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in N.Wi. The chips that you load in these units is also a little confusing to me. From what I’ve been able to determine, and please correct me if I’m wrong, Humminbird will only acc the Navionics chip, Garmin it appears, only has their own chip, and Lowrance will take Lakemaster or Navionics. I’m a little worried about Lowrance, as they seem to have taken quite a beating lately on their performance and customer service. With that said, they do seem to be the most versatle unit in terms of chip acceptance? If you were in my position, which way would you lean, given your experience’s with the different the units? Thanks in advance for your time and info.

    First off, Welcome to IDO.

There is a flashing envelope at the top of the screen. If you click on that you will open a private message,PM. In that PM you will get my personal cell number. I will be more than happy to answer your questions to the best of my ability.
