I found this article on discussion on upcoming discussions regarding walleye management in Minnesota. It’s an interesting read.

I hope I’m not stepping on any toes by posting this link…if so feel free to delete the link.

One of the things the article says is that protecting large walleyes might be detrimental to young fish survival via cannibalism. But don’t we stock fish to get big ones? I mean, if they’re already there what is the problem? Sounds like the goal driving that thought is to have as many 15″ walleyes as possible. Not my idea of a good fishery, though I understand the appeal to some.

They mentioned Mille Lacs … maybe the DNR should stock perch or some other preferred food source to ease the cannibalism if that’s what’s preventing the stocked walleyes from reaching adulthood.

I think the key is striking a balance between big fish and eaters. I won’t complain if I catch big fish all day and get nothing to bring home. But I think some people want to catch fish they can keep to eat and rightfully so.

I think the issue with cannalbilism is that the big fish are doing fine but what happens when the big fish are gone and the small ones aren’t there to take their place because they have been eaten. I think this is where they want to strike a balance and keep lakes like Mille Lacs and Leech from having these big boom and bust cycles and keep it more even.

Personally, I believe those cycles are natural and would occur regardless of regs and regardless of any hook and line fishing. It did for much of the late 80’s and early 90’s where the regs remained unchaged for over 10 years. (one over 20 inches, 6 fish limit) During that time there were boom and bust years. Record harverts and down right dead sea.

Dick wrote in an earler report that a balanced approach is needed. Meaning regs that allowed harvest of bigger fish to maintain a balance. Rather than regs that cater to a harvest (poundage) amount as is today.

The current situation where regs are relegated to politicians and the whim of tribal harvest is BS and doomed for failure in the long run.

That’s the one sure thing in all of this!
