My only thought is for the lower end, if you’re changing your lube at least once or better yet twice per year, why would you want to spend that kind of money?
The gears are in a bath of oil, can a “super oil” remove heat and metal shavings that much better than the cheap stuff?

Not only am I not a mechanic, but some people say I can’t can’t boil water without burning it. My little disclaimer.

Just use Quicksilver. I stick with Merc products for Merc products. The extra few bucks over the cost of Lubrimatic is no big deal. and less than Amzoil.

As far as Amzoil goes….Their salesmen remind me of Amway salesmen

    OK, that’s it!
    KEVIN!

    What’s wrong with AMWAY salesmen?

Or Amzoil salesman for that matter? They are just trying to sell a product and/or structure that they believe in.

But then again, I don’t care for anyone that works for 3M or Anderson windows…(just kidding guys! )

Oil and lubricant questions are always loaded ones. It’s always tough to give good un biased advise. Everyone has an opinion and a favorite. Good for them.
Seeing is believing. If you have SEEN something work well and BELIEVE in it, then nothing else really matters.
For what it’s worth, I run Amsoil products and love them. I started years ago in my sleds, and now use it in my boat.
I would give it a high recommendation.

Although I do not use Amsoil on my outboards currently, I think they make great lubricant products. I raced motocross for 14 years and saw a difference in performance as well as crankcase temps between Amsoil and conventional lubricants. Not saying one is better than the other, but I have had some very pleasant experiences with Amsoil products.
As far as my outboards go, I am sticking with all Merc products for lubes as well as injector oils to not void any warranty issues that could possibly arise.

    But Steve!
You can use ANY other product than the manufacturers recommended lube, and it will not void the warrenty. If the opposite was true, they would have to supply you with the oil until the warrenty period was over…..It’s a point of law.

Just want to narrow the subject here…we are talking about lower end lube…right? It’s change at a minimum of once a year. How can any brand, synthetic or otherwise make that much a differance in the life of the gears…it’s an oil bath!
I haven’t any experiance with Amzoil. I’m not knocking the product…I just can’t see how any oil would extend the life of the gears. Help me out her guys…

Brian, to answer your question, regardless of what lube is a person’s favorite, there are some out there that do a better job. They create less friction and heat than other brands. There are all kinds of heat and viscosity breakdown tests that have been done by independent testing labs that you can look at. If you only change it once a year, that makes a ton of difference. If you were to change it once a week on the other hand, you could probably get away with using peanut butter!
