I don’t think Minnesotans are truely passionate about their hunting and fishing as much as they could/should be. True, this is a hunting/fishing site, so here things are a bit more slanted, but even so, why is it that every time a license fee goes up, or a permit cost goes up, people cry and complain? Why did it take 10+ years to get the constitutional amendment passed, and a very watered down version to boot?

We all individually feel we care about these things we are interested in, but we as a population in its entirety do not show it or express it. Thus my assessment that “Minnesotans are not passionate”.

So there is no misunderstanding, I am a Minnesotan, and I do love my hunting, fishing, and my Minnesota Vikings.

    Good one!

There is one more reason ticket sales are slower here than most places. We are still working within a system that was set up years ago with corporate buy outs. Most of these people coming to the games using “company” tickets aren’t native Minnesotans. With all the corporate HQ’s we have in the city, many of people working for them that get these “season” tickets aren’t even true Viking fans. They are fans only because they do not live where their “home team” plays, and going to the Vikings games give them the dose of professional sports they want. As was said earlier, 55% of the season ticket holders did not buy playoff tickets when they went on sale because they had to renew their season tickets for next year in order to get the playoff ticket. 45% did renew and got their playoff tickets. Now that the holidays are behind us, and its back to business as usual, the rest of those tickets should sell.

You bought your tickets, didn’t you Brian?

No Jack, I guess I didn’t get a ticket!! Darn!!

While your theory of outside corporate people has some validity I don’t think it amounts to nearly the numbers needed.

We all know there are a lot of reasons they haven’t sold out yet. The least of which is a lack of fans. Sad as it may be to us baseball fans, this still is a football state, and will always be one.

When you combine the economic situation, the timing (holidays) and dissatisfaction with the management (Childress) and offense(lack of imagination) and you will have tickets unsold. Keep in mind also that your living room is the best place to watch the game!!

Also we must keep in mind that with satellite radio, Internet access, satellite TV there are many ways to find out about the games.

The game will not be blacked out. Ziggy and the NFL both need the public to get behind this team for the new stadium push.

BTW Jack, what section of the dome are you in?

If I could walk I’d go, but the way things are for me with my back, I’m lucky if I can even stay on my feet 5 minutes. Absolutely no way I could get in and out of the Dome without someone carrying me. I’ll buy us both a ticket if you want to carry me up and down all the stairs. I’ll even get tickets right behind the Vikings bench so you can yell and berate Chilly!!

Thanks for the offer, think I’ll pass.

Get comfortable and watch the game and get healed up. At least they shouldn’t give you any reasons to jump up and get excited!!

Get better, I’m looking forward to the Pike hunt next summer.

    GO VIKES GO!! (Hows that?)

Don’t what to get into this whole Packer/Viking bashing thing. Just want to be civil and wish good luck to the Packers this weekend. Who are they playing in the first round?

A good friend of mine went through the numbers and sent this over… thought it was interesting.

Check out their eight road games this year:
    Dallas 41, Philly 37
    Chicago 24, Philly 20
    Philly 40, S.F. 26
    Philly 26, Seattle 7
    Cincy 13, Philly 13 (tie)
    Baltimore 36, Philly 7
    Philly 20, NYG 14
    Washington 10, Philly 3
And check out Minnesota’s eight home games:
    Indy 18, Minny 15
    Minny 20, Carolina 10
    Minny 12, Detroit 10
    Minny 28, Houston 21
    Minny 28, Green Bay 27
    Minny 34, Chicago 14
    Atlanta 24, Minny 17
    Minny 20, NYG 19
So we have a 3-4-1 road team laying points to a 6-2 home team playing in one of the only definitive Good Home-Field Advantage Arenas left in football? How does that make sense?
Oh, yeah, I forgot … Tarvaris Jackson.

I think the Vikes are being underestimated a bit this year. Right now the only way they lose is if they turn the ball over. If they hold onto the ball they can beat any team in the playoffs.

I predict the Vikes will win 27-10.

I also predict that the Lions will get back to the playoffs before the Packers.

Holy cow, take a nice big drink of purple cool-aid did you Lenny….

My dad did not buy playoff tickets for all the reasons mentioned above. Tough time of year to cought up $1200.00. He called and asked if I wanted to buy them. I laughed. I had a 4 wheeler to buy!!

    Go Vikes!!!!

Not looking to start a fan war guys. Just totally blown away that a team has trouble selling tickets to a freaking play off game!

Like others have said I think the economy has the most to do with it than anything else and IMO it will get worse the next couple of years before it gets better, just wait till gas prices go back up. Unemployment is up, businesses are going under, home foreclosures are at a record high, and the list goes on and on. The cheapest tickets right now are $80 so for me and my wife to to the game we would have to drop $160, around $30 for gas from Rochester if we are lucky, parking, not even sure how much that is these days $15 to $20????? Another $50 for food & beer = $255 I simply can not justify spending that much money for 3 hours of entertainment, but now if someone wants to pay for my tickets and pick me up in a limo I would not say no just let me know what time you are picking me up

Otherwise I will be sitting in my lazy boy on Sunday watching the game.

What does it take to be a “true fan”? If someone can’t afford to go to the game and is forced to watch the game on TV – should we consider them a not being a “true fan”?

If someone wishes to watch the game at home versus in person – should we consider them not being a true fan?

If someone would rather spend their hard earned money on other things versus the game and chooses to watch it on TV, should we consider them not being a true fan?

I’m currently in Las Vegas visiting family over the New Years Holiday and will not be going to the game but will be watching it on TV – do you consider me not being a true fan?

I believe a true fan is someone that supports their team through the good times and the bad times regardless of where they are or where they do it.

There was roughly 1 million people per week attending NFL games this season. The economy has some to do with the Vikes trouble selling tickets but it surly isn’t the big reason. The economy isn’t much different there than any other play off city. I honestly think it has far more to do with fan commitment. Nothing more and nothing less. This Isn’t the first time this season that Minny had almost been blacked out. Seems FOX Sports bought several thousand tickets early in the season and who knows how many other times or companies did this. Fan commitment. It will be interesting to see how soon the Humpty Dump gets replaced. Hard to convince people to help pay for something people don’t use.

Rat..that might well be the most intelligent post in all the sports threads I’ve glazed over!

I’m sorry guys…being a non sports kinda guy that I am, the Vikes and the Twins remind me of fishing a small lake.

Take, take, take…and never release or put anything back…then wonder why all the good fishing is gone.

I’m not against these guys…I don’t ask them to pay for my fishing or to get a floor heater at my job…I think they have big bxxxs for asking us/me to pay for there place of employment..

I am with Brian on this one why should we pay for it? It will not put any money in my pocket, let the owners and players pay for it. I would love to see this put up for a vote by MN residents, it would be a landslide vote and the message would ring loud and clear……. NO MN TAX DOLLARS TO HELP PAY FOR A NEW STADIUM!

I thought it was up for a vote and was turned down…or was that the Twins stadium that’s being built. Can’t keep them all straight.

I can be a fan of the Twins and Vikes and never set foot in any stadium. I have been to games, but the best seat is in my basement. Seems riveratt must go to all the games…. that or he isn’t committed. Can’t have it both ways.

BK and Steve, I don’t want to pay for a stadium either, I would think ticket sales and moreover, jersey and hat sales should take care of it. I am with you on that one.

    Gas prices under $2.00
    Vikes in the playoffs
sold enough tickets to allow local tv
    AND
one hard core sports guy speaks publicly about not wanting to pay for a stadium. (sorry Steve, your not hard core)

Ole and Sven were right “Hell is freezing over!”

I do hope the guys in purple do well. (I’m hoping that statement will keep my house from being toilet papered tonight.)
