Non-Res WI Fishing License Question

Just a quick question and I cannot find the answer online.

If an out-of-state angler purchases a fishing license in January 09’, will it expire March 31, 09’? Is there a cut-off date where the license would extend all the way until March 2010’ without waiting until April 1st, 2009 to purchase?

    Thanks,

    Pete

If you buy a license in January of ’09, it will expire on March 31, ’09

No AM…if he buys it on Jan 1 of 2009 it won’t expire until March 31 of 2010. I bought my WI non Res license in March 22 of 2008 and it won’t expire until march 31 of 2009. I get to fish both 2008 and 2009 March P-4 trips on the same license. Thank you Wisconsin DNR!
It doesnt go by 12 months but seasonal dates.

It must have recently been changed then.
I know for a fact that Lntony has bought a NR license in late December and had to buy a NEW one in March.

Could that be because he bought it in the previous year (Dec)?

Don’t know for sure. The best way to get the true answer is to call the DNR. Buying in late December or January shouldn’t make a difference, it is still within the license year and before the date you can buy your next year license.

Your license will expire March 31st

    From the book

    Quote:

All annual licenses are valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2009

I do know there is some unwritten grace period starting in March.

Am and bret r right! Tom what u bought was probably a 2009 license because the gamefish season was closed in WI on all inland waters after March 5th i believe. At that time they are no longer selling 2008 licenses and gearing up for 09 sales. 2010 licenses are not available yet so any license purchased now expires march 31 09

Just looked at my license….I bought it last April from Dean because my 2007 was still good in March
    Purchased 04/06/08…. expires March 31, 2009
So when I come to Everts on March 26, 2009 I will use my 2008 license again! Michigan works the same way.

The last time I checked April is after March

    That would make since.

Please do not confuse the question Tom

If you purchase a non resident license today or even January of 2009, it will expire March 31st year 2009.

I’m confused Bret… I purchased my license on April of 2008…it is still good through March 31 2009

I do NOT need to purchase 2009 a Non resident fishing license until April 1 2009 because my 2008 license is good through March of 2009…So why does my April license purchase carry through Jan ,Feb, and March of the next year?

So the hard water guy gets hammered in the wallet if he comes to fish Jan-March? That is cruel. One buys a license on April 1 he has a full 12 months for the same price.

Your license carries through Jan, Feb, March because the license year ends on March 31.

    That is correct

As AmWatson said, it is a yearly license which expires the end of March 2008-2009, next will be April 2009 to the end of March 2010.

hairjig, even if it was only meant as a jab in the side, that comment probably wasn’t necessary…

Historically, WI used to run their license on the calendar basis, Jan 1 through Dec. 31. I think they decided to change it to reflect the general game fish season, which opens in May on the first Sat. and closes at midnight on the first Sat. of March.

So new licenses are valid from April 1, 20xx through March 31, 20xx.

This will only happen the first year Tom, because there is a grace period in March that your 09′ license will be good. I would assume they start selling 09′ licenses as soon as the gamefish season ends on inland waters.

And yes they did move the license expiration date from Dec 31 to March 31 to coinside with all other licenses, so the people that bought a sportsman’s wouldn’t have license’s expiring at different times of the year. Now ALL licenses expire on March 31—-even a gun/deer hunting license, even though gun season is long over.
