Last year I bought a heater from someone on here. Can’t remember who it was though. Anyway…I can’t get it to fire up. I have a brnd new tank of propane on it,but I can’t even get the pilot light to stay lit! I can get a flame to the pilot if i hold the red button it,but as soon as I let off, It goes out. Anyone have an Idea what might be the problem?

$10 for a new thermocouple and you’re back in the game.
December 23, 2008 at 12:04 am #730937One quick note.
Make sure the flame is hitting the thermocouple. If it’s bent out of the flame, you’ll have the same problem.
If everything is lined up…refer to the above.
December 23, 2008 at 12:07 am #730939Even while holding the button in,I bearly get enough flame to come out the “chute”. It doen’nt even come close to the thermal couple……..
December 23, 2008 at 12:14 am #730948There’s almost no flame coming out of the pilot lite. Like I said….It’s not with in 3 ” of the couple….Almost like there isn’t enough pressure…….

Chapster, the thermocouple can’t be 3 inches away from the pilot…at least I’ve never heard of one being that far away.
Anyway to get a photo?
December 23, 2008 at 12:28 am #730959There is always duct tape However, I don’t think that will help with the flame.
I am going back to my corner, Sorry Chap

They find me plenty handsome Bob!
I think it’s a bad valve????
December 23, 2008 at 1:19 am #730982There is no way, the pilot assembly is typically within a inch of the thermocouple, are sure on this?
The chute should be with in a 1″ or so of the thermocouple, look to see if something is loose, did the thermocouple come loose?
You should be able to get a thermocouple at a hardware store, take the old one with, and yes it could be bad.
Did you you check the gas pressure?

I would suggest the thermocouple is in the worng position. I don’t know any heater, that would have a 3-4″ pilot, you’d better get a 1000 lb, tank, to keep that pilot going… Definitely mispositioned thermocouple

December 23, 2008 at 1:31 am #730992I think it’s the fetzer valve. Some 3 in 1 oil and some guaze pads ought to take care of it.
Filth muck!

1/4 million BTU what are u heating bud??? Are u sure it isn’t rigged for natural gas and not prophane might have to change jet ????December 23, 2008 at 1:58 am #730997Must be a really big ice shack, I want in. Sounds like the flame is not placed where it should be, you can test the tcouple with a propane torch if you have one handy. First off, be darn sure you have no leaks, test the lines with some soap water! Second, fire up the torch on low, hit the tcouple with it while holding down the pilot button/knob. Don’t over heat it! Just back and forth on low, keep letting go of the pilot knob to see if it keeps going on its own. If it keeps going for a bit and then dies, the tcouple is probably fine and not being kept warn by the pilot light due to the light being too far from the tcouple. If this is so, check the mounting bracket on the couple or pilot and see if you can get them closer together. BE SAFE!

I’ll see if I can get a picture up. 3″ might be kind of a stretch. But it is a “distance” between them.
December 23, 2008 at 10:46 pm #731207I think it needs alot bigger tank than I’m trying. I think it needs a 100# tank.
December 23, 2008 at 10:58 pm #731209I’m a dummy. I assummed when you said you have a new tank…you were talking about a 100 pounder.
My 50,000 is the largest torpedo type heater that will work on a 20 pounder.
That is your problem sir!
I think St Croixer has some 100 pounders still for sale in the classifieds.

I was going to heat the garage when I have fish Fry’s. Wasn’t sure how big of one I needed. I’m guessing 250 is too big? Oh well….I’ll sell it and get a smaller one. Thanks guy’s.
December 24, 2008 at 12:05 am #731225You should be able to heat the space and fry the fish with that much heat.
No replacement for displacement, why bring a knife to a gun fight, why
December 24, 2008 at 3:10 am #731272You’ll need good ventilation. I have a 35,85,100,000 btu Reddy heater propane heater and it takes about 20 minutes before the fumes got too bad. Mine also goes out sometimes and I have to restart it. I bought it used this last fall so didn’t use it before that. Anyway..I had to open the garage door up about 2 feet and open the service door for it to be ok. Otherwise my eyes were burning.
