    This can’t be good??

Tankers spilling fertilizer into river at derailment site
    By Winona Daily News

    .
DRESBACH, Minn. — Two tankers, each carrying as much as 25,000 gallons of liquid nitrogen, rolled down an embankment and into the Mississippi River overnight at the site of a train collision near Dresbach.

One car has spilled half its fertilizer into the river, and the other car has leaked as much as 75 percent, said Cathy Rofshus, a spokeswoman with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
“It’s leaking directly into the Mississippi River,” she said.

The Department of Natural Resources is examining the water and searching for potential fish kills, and a special agriculture-chemical spill team has taken over the effort to contain the spill, she said.

“Puddles” of fertilizer and train fuel have formed along the bank, and crews are building berms to contain the leaks,” Rofshus said.

One of the train’s locomotive engines also is still in the water, she said.

was this on pool 7 or pool 8? the only information I could gather was that it was near Lock and dam 7.

hopefully this doesn’t have too much of an effect on the fish..

Is liquid nitrogen used as a fertilizer? As far as I know, it’s going to vaporize as soon as it’s exposed to ambient conditions (it boils at -321F). And being that the atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, this doesn’t seem like it’d be a big deal. There must be something else that is cause for concern.

Another thing to consider, alot of fertilizers and pesticides make their way into our waterways, through farming as it is. No doubt, this high concentration is not gonna help

I’m pretty sure the fertelizer is Ammonia.

I’m not sure we can blame the RR company yet, I haven’t seen a cause listed.

there are trains sections that have 2 parallel tracks converging to one, then back to two. These trains were going the same direction, and converged where the tracks come together.

there is a train traffic monitoring system, just like the Air traffic Control FAA system I’ve been a part of for over 30 years.

Rule one is something to the effect of, 2 aircraft can not occupy the same space at the same time.

Am looking forward to hear a followup, of the train traffic system.

Usable with a 10mph speed limit through the area. Lots of major cleanup yet.
