No, I don’t. But, what’s a guy to do. I quit worrying about it several months ago. I’m lucky to be in the IT field, but even that job market has really dried up over the last few weeks.
The chips are going to fall where they will.
worried a little, but in Collections there is a increase unfortunately of jobs out there.
My father in law just lost his job yesterday and at 73 it’s not looking good for him on getting a new one.
with me in the construction field I worry about mine every day. I do have a job that is unique in the fact that not that many people do it so the work is a little more steady,
but with work slowing across the board more and more companies are trying to diversify and some are trying to move into this field. that can be good and bad for me as we get a lot of calls now to fix their mistakes
Worried? Nope. I try very hard not to worry about something I can’t change. If we slow enough that I get laid off, oh well…… Worrying accomplishes nothing and if nothing bad happens, it was wasted time anyhow……
I would anticipate a 50/50 chance I will be employed in 1 month. If I lose the job, I’ll try to find another…..
Tim
I just got out of a company meeting this morning andthe news was good, for awhile at least.
The company I work for is having a record year for profits and work is continuing to be there. They had planned on hiring 20 more people, but that was the only negative thing they had to say. By not hiring anymore, those of us that are working now will continue to be busy amd be able to keep getting overtime
But, if it changes and we do get laid-off, I have been down that road for the last 6 years and will get by if needed.
I never feel secure at my job…even if your self employed (and Im not) its best not to feel to secure.. you need to remain “fearful” enough to work hard and compete… not that fear is tbe “only” motivator.. because pride and a strong work ethic and just plain stubborness are also factors… what worries me is that my contingency plans are getting thinner and thinner…. I dont know if you play those little games of “what if”… but when I play what if I loose my job lately my likely options are not looking good right now… we could probably survive if my honey got work… but even in her field the options are drying up.. worst case both of us might not have work… that ISNT going to work for us.. I cant see a scenario of that which isnt a disaster… I THINK we have a final refuge though.. and I guess thats a good thing…
Nope, not feeling too secure at all. 30 people laid off and the rest of us on 3/4 time and this in the medical electronics industry which I thought would be fairly safe. In the past when times got tough I was able to stay above water by hanging around loading docks and getting truckers to let me unload them or shoveling snow or cleaning barns etc. At 56 and not in the best shape some of those options may not be there for me but my freezer is full of beef and game and the pantry has lots of canned veggies from the garden. Desparation is a great motivator and I’m sure I will get by. I’ve not been hungry or homeless for more than a few days at a time.
For those of you that have fallen on hard times or just need a little help stretching the food budget check out Sisters Camelot they are a non-profit group that distributes FREE fresh organic produce throughout the Minneapolis and St,Paul areas on Tuesday and Thursday’s
if you have the day free they can always use help with distribution. ( it’s a lot of work to load 5-10,000 Lbs of produce on the truck and get it out to the public )and for your efforts you get first pick it’s a good way to help the less fortunate and take the sting out of your grocery bill. and best of all no pesticides
The whole economic situation is scary, do I sit and worry about my job nope, can’t control it, my wife on the other hand worries enough for both of us. I/we do worry about bills getting paid and food on the table as prices increase my pay hasn’t risen at that rate. If I were to fall back on hard times there are always jobs out there, it’s just a matter of what you want to do and what will you do to survive.
I am fortunate to be in IT working for a company that has an application for 3rd party Health care Administrators, so I feel pretty secure, although I am low on the totem pole. The other thing is that we are a start up who already budgeted in losing millions of dollars.
However it does not keep me from worrying about brother’s and sisters, heck my fellow Americans in general.
The way our company is going, I’ll be surprised if I still have a job by the end of the year.
Worrying about it doesn’t help. We’ll cross that bridge when (and if) it comes.
I just need to make it another 16 months. Then I can tear up the mortgage paper and get that house payment off my back. At that point I could bag groceries and maintain my present standard of living. I worry more about health insurance now. Working for a small company I could keep my job and still lose coverage. That’s pretty scary too.
Let’s see….get the house paid off, then get a part time job at a sporting goods store. More time to fish the river, employee discount. Hmmm….

Wats…I didn’t know you worked for Exxon. Here is my stance when it come to my job…..I was looking for a job when I got this one. The only thing you can do is put in an HONEST days work, if your going to glide through your day, you will be looking for a job soon. Actually I feel a little silly posting this while I am at my desk. Gotta go…
Not all that secure. I’m doing my best and I’ve got a positive outlook. However, I’m looking for replacement employment at the same time. Not too hard though. There isn’t much out there. That’s why I just have to make the best of what I’ve got. Oh yeah, my wife lost her job yesterday. It could be worse though, right?
The wife got laid off a couple months ago but has found a new job. She had to take a bit of a pay cut but it is still a job. My company is actually increasing revenue and operating profit but still cutting Christmas parties and such. I would feel pretty secure (Did I just jinxed myself?) but I’m in IT, so there is always the threat of outsourcing. My company announced last month that they are outsourcing something like 70 or 100 jobs to India and the Philippines. I guess they can hire 6 Filipinos for 1 MN employee. My department has a “team” in India that I’m sure down the line will be the only team in my department…

Our company tried that. We found it takes 6 of them to do the job of one of us!!! Took 3 times longer too. That experiment did not last long.
After 20+ years working here at the same company I have carved out a nitch. I know a little bit of everything so they keep me around. I’m happy here.

AM, Just curious, what industry are you in?
We are on the verge of losing our biggest customer (85% of our work) so I am very un-secure about my job , we’ve lost/laid off over 50 people within the last month with more planned for this friday
Don’t feel overly secure in my profession, but if you all keep eating chicken….. northern grown chicken , you will keep myself and 2jranch in business. Eat lots of it!!!!

Steel manufacturing. The company I work for is a steel welding job shop. We build industrial crane frames, booms for cranes, and bridge parts for MN DOT.
