Wow! I cannot believe I fell for it. I got a text message on my cell phone that looked real and told me my bank account was closed due to unusual activity and that I needed to call my bank at a certain number. It caught me off guard and I stupidly called the number and started responding to the questions, i.e. type in your debit card number. Type in your debit card expiration date. Type in … Suddenly I realized this was a big mistake and hung up. I called the regular number for the nice folks at my bank and they nicely explained that this was a scam. They transferred me to the Fraud department where they cancelled my debit card immediately and then tried to reassure me that since I had not given up any more info I would probably be OK. What do you think? Should I do more?
I warned my wife shortly after this. Sure enough, she just called to let me know she got a similar message on her cell phone, but she had the good sense not to call the number.
I realize this is probably fairly common, but I just have not paid much attention. Now, however, I am concerned.
