Hey guys. I am going to do some night-time crankbait trolling this weekend. I was just curious how well the Fireline spooled on my Diawa line counter reel will hold up with the cold water temperatures in the low 40’s or so and very cold nights? Anyone have some experience trolling with Fireline in cold water? Thanks in advance for everyone’s imput.

It will freeze solid on your spool on the cold nights. House it down with Reel Magic or some other spray with a good water repellent additive. It is only a temporary fix. Using mono would be the best way to go but I usually just tough it out and even go so far as to pull the line off the spool by hand if needed.

Everything gets tough up there when the temps drop below freezing. The nets will freeze. Hands will get wet and then cold. If it weren’t for all those HUGE walleyes, we wouldn’t have to even bother with it now would we?!

Thanks James. I was thinking that cold weather might not be good for using fireline. What would you recommend James if using mono as far as pound test & brand of line on Mille Lacs for trolling for walleyes? Also I have usually been letting out about 80 ft of Fireline when trolling Rogues & Husky Jerks. What length of mono would you let out for these same crankbaits? Thanks again.

It’s hard to beat 10 Lb xt for trolling if mono is to be used. I’d expect to need to run 100 -125 ft of line to try and compensate for the diameter difference between the two lines.
