Sixty Seven year old Ben Schurlock of Davenport Iowa was fishing the Rock River in Erie with his friend Dan Franz for catfish on tuesday the 4th. He had just pulled in a five pound cat and thought this was a good start. Minutes later he had another bite. After reeling the fish to shore they knew that they had a special catch. It was a shovelnose sturgeon. It weighted a hefty 8.36 pounds, breaking the Illinois state record of 5.2 lbs. and the world record of 7.5 lbs. Whats really something is that Ben caught bigger shovlenoses then that one this past summer. Congratulations Ben.

Wow! You never know what you’ve got unless you check the book. I caught a white bass in the Mississippi backwaters about 10 years ago that (I’m guessing on it’s weight now) was close to the state record. Congrats

First, Congrats on the record! Your fish certainly blew the old record away!

I looked up the record for Minnesota and it stands at 5 pounds 5 ounces. I need to go back and look at a few old pictures I have! lol
