I saw a walleye caught out of the Root the other day that had NO teeth in its mouth. Is this normal, time of the year, or just an old fish? JLK

That is normal. Walleyes teeth fall out this time of year.

Walleyes don’t “shed” their teeth. Not sure what was up with that particular fish but there isn’t a regular and predictable pattern of complete tooth loss for Mr. Walleye that I’m aware of.

Make sure that your walleyes have a “wall-eye” and a white spot on the tail……….sometimes those carp can be pretty tricky!!!!

    Here’s my take —

It’s 100% myth.. Started with Pike teeth falling out because they were harder to catch mid-summer. Milton Trautman and Carl Hubbs (fish bioligists) disproved the myth in the early 1900’s. They determined that more food was available during that time of the year…sooo, they were harder to catch.

When Pike teeth do fall out (or get pulled out) they do regenerate according to the MN DNR site, but they don’t “fall out” at the same time.

I would guess the fish caught with no teeth was an eye with a physical deformity.

    Thoughts?

Well, I had heard, prabably from that old post, of teeth either falling out or they just “shed” them. But I did see the fish. It did not have those nice big teeth. When the guy brought it in he asked me to check its mouth. No teeth! He is going to have it mounted. It was a rather large walleye for the Root! I personally have never caught a walleye or sauger this time of the year that had no teeth. I told him that I would find out the answer. I know you guys know all there is to know about this subject . Keep em coming and I’ll pick a good one to answer him with. Thanks all, JLK

Did you say it was from the Root river? Maybe it was a walleye/rainbow hybrid? Now we are getting somewhere!

Do you think that I have rivereyes frustrated yet? BTW-have you seen his new pic? Yikes!

OK… I see your point. Rather inhumane don’t you think to let “that” live on like this. Someone should put it down. And then bury the carcass.

Just like ecnook to leave a job half finished… lol

Just as a comment on this subject (or two).

I caught a really old pike on Vermillion 2 years ago on Opener. The fish weighed 29lbs (yes, 29 pounds!). Caught it on a lindy rig (yep–6lb test) while fishing for walleyes. Even though the fish had plenty of teeth, most of her big “fangs” were gone, as compared to a smaller fish.

The second story comes from a musky I caught 2 years ago on Mille Lacs. A fat 48 incher. While we were removing the hooks, I knocked out (by accident of course), one of her long “fangs”. That tooth is about 3/4′ long and about 1/8″ wide!!! When those fish slam big wood lures and they get that rocketing hookset, I would assume that it may knock a tooth or two loose. I kept that tooth and still have it today. Good conversation piece (but I did say OUCH for the fish)!!!

This thread is a great example of why I cancelled my cable subscription! Who needs cable with a bunch like this?

Hey Dennis “Riverrodman”………….I sent that ugly stick I stole out of your truck to Dave for my protection…………..I didn’t think he’d use it on ya! Oh well, you may be homliest thing since Jack Elam but at least you got a great tan!
