July 1st kicks off my open water trolling season. I know it is much later than most, but that is what my schedule allows. Like most others, that means pulling crawlers on blades suspended in the water column.
I wanted to share one tip today that has to do with the bait itself. When I set out for a day of prefishing, guiding or just fishing I take as many crawlers as I need and keep them in the cooler in my boat. From there, I take as many as I know I will use in a day. Usually 3 dozen or so and I put them in a Leech Tamer and throw them in the livewell to soak in water. I do this right away in the morning and let them soak all day while fishing. By doing this you remove the mess from your boat, and you end up with crawlers that are big, plump and lifeless. They are easier to hook-up on a crawler harness and do not spin or tangle your harness. In addition, you don’t have to keep opening the cooler or digging in dirt or worm bedding to get your bait. Open the livewell and there they are, nice and plump and ready to catch fish. Give it a try it won’t take long to figure out all the benefits
