AOL gets thumbs down!

Just had a very bad experience with AOL and thought I’d share it here. My wife called to cancel our AOL service today and was treated with terrible service. She was on hold several times for an hour. They kept trying to get her to stay with AOL and offered two free months. She told them she did not want it so they told her the “system was down” and she’d have to call later (this after getting run around for an hour). When she called later, they continued to give her the run around and finally told her they would not cancel it for her because I was not there and my name was the primary on the account (of course they were willing to extend the service without my say, but not cancel it). My wife finally hung up on the guy who was being a real jerk to her and she called me. I called AOL to cancel and the customer service person tells me “Oh, I see it was just cancelled today”. Isn’t that intersting. So what’s the policy AOL? Can she cancel it or not? Hmmm, more manipulation, lying, and deceptive tactics to try to get and keep customers. They want your money ANY way they can get it. If they could steal it out of your back pocket and get away with it, I think they would.

Bottom line, I think AOL stinks (I am considering others with my words here). This is our second, and last experience with this company. I think it’s a shame that these big companies can continue to treat people like crud and continue to stay in business.

We’re switching back to Net Zero. We had good luck with them before.

    AOL = EVIL

If you need help getting rid of all the junk they install to your computer everyday, let me know. They basically spy on your every action.

I have to agree, AOL is the most intrusive application you can install on a pc and one of the hardest to clean off. I constantly have users installing it here, I would like to kick their butts…….

As you could see from my experience with Best Buy, I’m a little down on customer service this week. I can’t believe the way larger businesses act after the sale. Good luck with your adventure with them.

here is one for you, try having AOL and MSN on the same machine. now that is funny and they knew about it when i called in to cancel my “free” internet. I told them that they had no right to be looking into my machine like that. I refuse to have anything to do with AOL. to bad though, just got the machine the way i liked it and had to wipe it clean, didnt want any left-overs on my pc. and even the backup i took of it wouldn’t work, still had AOL crap on it. stay away from AOL. I was looking at changing from MSN to something else. any suggestions.

    thanks

Shane, we had good luck with Net Zero. It’s cheap but works. Note that Compuserve is an AOL baby. Stay away from them too.

Why not a “Local” ISP? Wade, I believe Cable One there in Sioux City offers BroadBand. Then there’s Willinet, or Pionet for dial up. Then just use explorer/outlook or netscape – forget MSN or AOL or any other crap like that. They just add extra steps, extra crap to your machine (Spyware), and extra cost to you.

Good idea Aprock. But, I am going back to Net Zero. The only reason we had AOL again is that it was free for 6 months with the new computer we bought at Gateway. Net Zero did great for us before and is only $10/month. I use Long Lines at work (used to be Pioneer) for broad band access. It’s okay but down more than I’d like.

    Thanks,

    Shane,

I have had usinternet for 7 years and have had absolutely not one problem with them. I have never, not once been dropped. They are a local company out of Edina, I believe. I live very near you, they would service your area with dial up service.

Look over their services at http://www.usinternet.com

ditto on AOL. I had the same experience trying to call them and after being on hold for quite some time hung up. I decided to E Mail them regarding my problem and never got a response. Another waste of time. It seemed so ironic that with ala the junk there constantly adding they couldn’t even respond to an E Mail.

The kicker is I have AOL Broadband and have no idea how to remove all their junk from my computer and start over.

Good move getting rid of AOL I had them years ago when it was 6 months free. I called to cancel and they gave me 3 more free then 3 free again. I did manage a full year free but that was it. I just couldn’t take all the advertising they target you with and how they can monitor your surfing habtis.

I read the entire (like 20+ pages) MSN user agreement and really didn’t like them giving out my personal info including financial info to their associates! BIG Thumbs down!

I use TCQ.net in the twin cites and have had nothing but friendly service. If you want to talk to a real person they answer the phones. I have DSL and usually connect @640K. They charge $9.95/month for Dial up or DSL (DSL needs Qwest also ~$20 month)

    Tell them Ferny sent you.

If your worried about spyware running on your computer try Spybot search and destroy. It’s free ware. http://www.safer-networking.org/ Do a google search on it and look at the reviews. They’re all good. There’s another one called adaware I think that does a similar thing.

I was amazed to see me firewall stopping something from connecting. After doing some research I came across Spybot to get rid of things like that. It was amazing all the tracking things like Gator that were on my computer. Kind of scary when you think about it…YIKES! I don’t know if it works for getting rid of AOL since It wasn’t on this computer but I hope it would. So far I have ran it on 4 computers and every one had something on it!

    Good Luck,

    Ferny.

Just got rid of AOL. The CSR I talked to tried to convince me to stay, but I didn’t. It was a little annoying, but nothing like Wade’s wife’s experience.

Jon- How involved is it to get rid of the “stuff” they install on my puter? I really haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary, but I wouldn’t likely know what I was looking for anyway. I would like to get rid of anything that shouldn’t be there before we go to the cable modem.
    Thanks-
    Greg
