Full moon night bite….

I have been reading the reports and know that on Mille Lacs this bite is relatively shallow. I was wondering what you are looking for when targeting these fish. Access to deep water, points, reefs, shorelines, wind swepted etc.

I may try some late night fishing on 3rd Crow Wing in Park Rapids this weekend. There are lots of big fish (eyes and northern) in the lake, the main forage is perch, shiners and suckers and it is a relatively shallow lake w/ cabbage and pencil reeds along most of the shorelines and sunken islands.

    Thanks for any tips!

    Hey Dave,

I have never fished that lake, but have fished several lakes in the area during the fall. Question for you. Is the lake water clear or stained or downright coffee colored?

You can see the bottom in 4-5′. Most of the stain is algae colored. It isnt really stained, but it isnt a real clear lake either.

Well, I don’t know how much help this observation will be but on mille lacs I typically fish in the fall where I have/had found fish to stage post spawn in the spring.
Forage is also a factor. Shine your light in the water some night, and what do you see, the same thing the fish do? Food
    Thats usually helpful too.

Ok, that’s good. I have never done well on the dark stained lakes up there after dark. I think it’s worth a try.

Go out scouting looking for the areas you mentioned above. I’d be looking for areas where you can set up a good long troll. Transition areas especially hard to soft bottoms like sand beaches would be high on the list.

    Good Luck.

I think Bucher should send me a copy of his fishing log, just so I can substantiate his evidence/theory….
