Favre’s No. 4 to be retired Sept. 8 vs. Vikings

Brett Favre’s No. 4, the number worn by the Green Bay Packers quarterback for 16 seasons, will be retired at Lambeau Field on Sept. 8, team president and CEO Mark Murphy announced this afternoon.
That’s the Packers’ season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, a Monday night game to be televised live nationwide on ESPN.
Details of the ceremony are still being worked out and will be announced later.
“The season-opening game is always an exciting event, and now we’re very pleased to add the retirement of Brett’s No. 4 to that evening,” Murphy said in a statement issued by the Packers.
“It will make for an electric atmosphere at Lambeau Field, as well as a great opportunity for our fans around the country to share in it while watching the game on the national broadcast.”
The choice of the Vikings game also ensures that fans with the Green ticket package — widely known as the Green Bay package — will see that game instead of those with the Gold, or Milwaukee, package.
Favre helped pick the game at which he’ll be honored, Murphy said.
“Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and I looked at the entire schedule and felt the first game would be an ideal time to have the event. I spoke with Brett, as did Ted and Mike, about which game to choose,” he said in the statement.
“Ultimately, through our communications, we decided the first game would work great.”
Favre’s No. 4 will become the sixth number retired by the Packers.
It will be placed on the north wall of the stadium bowl along with the No. 14 of wide receiver Don Hutson (retired in 1951), the No. 3 of fullback Tony Canadeo (1952), the No. 15 of quarterback Bart Starr (1973), the No. 66 of linebacker Ray Nitschke (1983) and the No. 92 of defensive end Reggie White (2005).
