Can anyone recommend a good transmission shop in the Minneapolis area? We have a ’98 Explorer.

I can tell you about one shop I wouldn’t go back to. I used the Maaco shop in Eden Prairie for my 99 chevy. They had to put in 3 different trannies because they couldn’t get it right. Very disappointed. When I crawled under to look at it one day, the bell housing had a huge dent in it. Not from me either. I understand it probably had no affect on the mechanical portion, but aesthetically it really bothered me.

I would call around to actual transmission shops around the cities.. there are no shortages of them. I have never heard of any problems from reputable tranny shops around the cities.

Sometimes the trannys can be repaired vs replaced and it is much cheaper.

We have it at a shop (TSI?) in Brooklyn Park and they want to rebuild it for $2000-$2500. We just want to make sure we are getting the best deal we can.

That sounds about right for a rebuild and the labor.

The only way you might get by cheaper is buying a rebuilt transmission and having it installed. The only problem with that is the transmission will be under warranty, but the installers arent going to be responsible for replacing the tranny if it fails in the warranty period(you’ll get stuck for labor again).

I got a guy, that if I bring my vehicle in he is the guy! Curt has been doing tranny’s for a long time between him and his Dad. King Pin Transmission located in Shoreview right off of Victoria and 694. Give Curt a call @ 651-271-7312. Tell him I sent ya and you are on IDO. Curt has helped out a few members here and will shoot it to ya straight! I think he saved Gary Wellman some cash one time, when others were telling Gary false info!

    Thanks everyone!

I have passed all this info on to Francis. He gets to decide where the car gets fixed and I get to figure out how to pay for it. I think he gets the better end of the deal.
