I heard about it on the news last night too.. not good.

I want the river open as much as the next guy.. but tankers full of antifreeze isnt the way to do it.

It looks like the tank just split along a seam… How in the heck does that happen?

Why do these things always happen next to water?

Ya to them they only lost 10,000 gal of the 100,000 they shipped that day so it’s only a leak to them

I drove by it before it was known to all. I saw the broken rail car but didint know it was leaking. By the time I went home the bridge was closed (WHY!?) and I had to drive to Hudson to make it home. All I could think when seeing that train stalled across the bridge was what if it happend in the summer and a large boat couldnt return to port. Now I think about the antifreeze slick that would cross a mighty productive fishing spot.

Seems to me there is a fine due to pay back some of the resources lost.

My guess the fish kill should be at a minimum. Its obvious its very bad for the fish, but I have no doubt it would have been worse for them if the water was shallower than it is. The water is deep in that area and moving some. It was diluting as quickly as it hit the water, and the moving deeper water should keep it from concentrating in any one area for any period of time.

If there is a kill it was likely a few fish that were sitting directly under the spill area.

I hope my theory is right. It should be unless the fish are so sensitive to it that any exposure to minuscule amount is deadly.

The heck of it is… you know darn well someone from that company was aware of at least a small leak. I am sure drip leaks are common on tankers, and probably not a panic unless its a flammable substance directly threatening the train, or fast enough for considerable loss over delivery time.

ethylene glycol exposure in fish can cause a reduction in ability to swim. So BRINK keep an eye out for fish flopping on the surface.

The coldness of the water is going to slow the dilution of the anti freeze WAY down though, compared to summer water temps.

    From the article:

    Quote:

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances, ethylene glycol will break down in about ten days, after it is exposed to oxygen. Ethylene glycol in water and in soil, will breakdown within several days to a few weeks. Accidental or intentional ingestion of large amounts of ethylene glycol can cause serious illness or death.

That area is very shallow. It is just prior to the big sandbar where the rivers come together. The problem I see is that with the ice…it will be hard to implement any type of containment booms like they do with oil or gas. Sounds like they are just going to let it dilute and break down.
Here is a question for you all…How much anti freeze and windshield washer get dumped into the river every year from street run-off? How about asbestos from brake pads? Not trying to minimize this AT ALL! But this spill is probably a drop in the bucket. Albeit a lot of volume going in at one place at one time is definitely not good.

This could work out for next ice season on Pepin. It would be nice to catch some fish and not worry about them freezing solid after a day of fishing…..

I would think that containment booms would be ineffective due to the fact that this stuff is water solluable vs oil/gas -which float and don’t dissolve in water????
