My wife and I are thinking of getting kayaks..Ive used them before as my brother had several so I am a bit familiar with them…we do quite a bit of camping and thought they would be great on the north shore etc or other places we go where we dont bring the boat…We have a canoe but are interested in kayaks for something new and I enjoyed using my brothers but he is living in Colorado and brought his home so I cant scam his anymore..My question is has anyone ever fished from one and if so how is it casting etc…any input would be great…Thanks Jay

Take a look at the hobie fishing kayaks, They really look like a cool/fun boat!

Fly-Fished out of a kayak a few times while floating a stretch of river. Most of the casting out of the kayak was to hit a few small pockets that looked good but did not warrant getting out. If a hole looked good enough you basically had to get out and put a better effort into fishing. The few times I did it though was a great I really enjoyed myself. I need to find the time to take a kayak fishing trip again.

I fish out of a kayak often, infact just last sunday I did well for smallmouth.
I recomend the sit on top kayaks over the traditional kayaks ..

Fish out of mine a lot. I mounted 3 swivel rod holders on the front. They keep my rods out of the way while paddling and within easy reach. I keep each rod rigged different. I like to have one of those small folding anchors with me when on streams or rivers.

I know of a fellow who fishes big cats out of a kayak from time to time…. that would be a ride.

Myself, I think it’d be fun but by sense of balance ain’t that good.

Love to fish out of my kayak…mount a few rod holders on top or buy a model with the built in type….
Make sure you get the type of kayak with a large opening…. not the kind you wiggle in to….
There is a “Pungo” (I think) model that is made for fishing, tracks really well…..

You will love it…I hardly ever take out my canoe anymore….

I’ll second this one. My parents are getting a pair of them.

I do a lot of fishing out of a kayak in the summer, but my favorite thing to do is hunt from them. They are so stealthy. I shoot so many ducks/geese in the fall by this method.

I even take it to local marshes and get back to areas that are somewhat hard to get with normal boats, or smaller ponds that a boat can’t get to, then hide the kayak in brush, or sometimes actually shoot from it.

The best way i found though was to float a river and shoot from it, it’s so incredibly effective. Of course, go with a neutral color as you can.

I don’t own a canoe, and with the opportunities and ease of a kayak, i don’t think i ever will own a canoe.
