Its almost that time of year again. Hate this time of year but think I have it under control this time around. For some of you that haven’t realized it Valentines day is only 7 days away. Thought I would start this post to try to keep some of us guys from getting in hot water again this year. Heres what I am planning.

Im going to try to go over the top this year and make up for what I have been told where some pretty poor showings in the past. Thanks for letting me know that Dear. Got dinner planned at a nice Greek restaurant in S mpls called Christo’s. Havent eaten there yet but the smells from the kitchen are out of this world and they have a huge wine selection in front that hopefully impresses the wife. After dinner Im thinking of go to a play or show. Anyone been to anything good in the cities lately. If I dont do a show it will most likely cost me some jewelry.

Hopefully a good showing on the 14th will mean more water time down the road.

What am I planning? A card.

Anything more is spoiling her and setting expections too high for the future.

Thats exactly my thought. I have in the past made the mistake of kinda going over the top for certain occasions but I have learned I am setting a bar that I have to meet and exceed easch year. So I think its better to do much less on the Hallmark holidays and maybe do a suprise here and there for no reason and theat way your not on the hook each year at set times.

If you guys buy roses, here’s some things to keep in mind.

#1. Buy roses that are mostly closed(pre-bloom). If they appear open and in full bloom they won’t last long. Pre-bloom roses will last twice as long.

#2. Keep the stem ends fresh. I’ll cut the ends when I get them home and then once again a few days later. ALWAYS cut them under water. A utility knife or sharp steak knife will do the job nicely. Don’t leave them out of the water after cutting. This can kill the rose quicker than you want.

#3. Keep the water fresh. When you change the water, cut the stems. I typically take 2″ off.

#4. The little packet that comes with the roses, it’s not there for you to conveniently toss in the garbage. Pour it into the water, it does help.

The last set of roses I bought for my wife, I kept alive for just over 2 weeks by doing the above.

At $60-80 per dozen, you should want to get the most for your $$$.

I’m lucky enough to have a wife who would rather go fishing than any thing else! She doesn’t like jewelry, if I get her flowers she wants a plant instead of cut dead flowers. So it will probably be on the ice some where this year again!!!

My wife and I were together for almost six years, married for one year at that point, before I ever sent her flowers. How’s that for setting the bar low?

I’m lucky that my wife knows that Valentine’s Day is a holiday designed to sell chocolate and roses and cards. And I know that if she ain’t happy, a dozen roses in February isn’t going to fix it. Her birthday is worth going to some work for, but Valentines Day isn’t (at least, in our minds). We’ve discussed this before, and we’re both on the same page.

We’ll probably go out to eat somewhere nice, and that will be that.

Thanks for the reminder, all the same.

As my wife would tell you… the BEST and longest lasting roses I ever bought for her were purchased at Rainbow foods… something like $15 for a dozen. They lasted almost 2 weeks and were better quality than any I had purchased at the floral shops.

I haven’t bought flowers for her in 6 years. The last time I bought her roses was when I came home with 11 roses in a vase… and 1 fake rose in my pocket that opened up to reveal a 2.8 carot diamond ring (for engagement). As I walked in the door and gave her the roses (I figured she would count them… as that is what she is like… and I could pull out the last remaining rose and propose)… well, she got all MAD as hell at me… put them on the counter and huffed off saying that she was broke and would rather I have bought milk and eggs! I waited a few hours for her to cool off and then tossed the fake rose to her.

yes, we got married… and I haven’t bought her flowers since.

Mike a neat idea is a show. I would suggest a little bit early gift. I went to “The Lord of the Dance”, about 5 or 6 years ago with the wife. I figured I would be bored out of my skull… truth is, it was pretty cool. They are in town the 9th and 10th of Feb, not sure if theres any tickets left, at the Orpheum. I am sure she and even yourself would enjoy it. Great music, and them dancers are true athletes

I call Valentine’s Day – Hallmark Day. The Holiday when you have to versus want to! I will recognize it but it will be something little. I’d rather give her some flowers or a gift on another day when she doesn’t expect it. It just means a lot more.
