Does anyone rely on this for computer security?

I have Nortons Version 10.0.1.1000 installed and it appears to be working fine.

My Ad-Aware se works, but I can’t get it to update. It gets to about 5% then it gives and error. This is the error.

    Quote:

    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avg7core.sys: starting service….
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. (1450)

So I don’t know if I can fully trust it to be operating at 100%.

Trend came with my Dell, it’s recently expired, and I’m not sure if I should re-up this software?

Any help is always greatly appreciated.

I’m cheap I run AVG free edition http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0

Word has it Avast is the best free program out there http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=pop.software

I ran trend pc cillin before I thought it was a great program too, never had any issues while running it, it did find some viruses.

I also run Spyware blaster, to keep a bunch of junk from downloading in the first place, either accidently or on it’s own. http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10196637.html?tag=lst-2

I also like Spybot http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=lst-1 , pretty much the same as adaware, though I do use adaware too.

And maybe it’s time to upgrade to the new verson of adaware http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?tag=lst-1

EDIT: Personally I dislike norton’s, a lot, it’s a resource hog and bog my computer down, I find AVG doesn’t do that. I delete Norton’s on any computer I set-up.

Yes, I did use to run the Trend anti-virus for several years, with excellent results. However, a computer eng. that I trust, suggested AVG. I really like this because once you load it, it’s maintance-free, works fantastic, tailorable to your needs, and FREE.
The reason that you keep getting error codes on the ad-aware updates is that they are no longer supporting the SE version and they want people to convert to the new Ad-Aware 7 version. If you go to the Ad-Aware website/forum they go into detail about not being able to afford to keep two systems running. In my opinion, they cancelled the wrong one.

Maybe Tom P. will chime in here…….he suggested I try the Trend Micro after I was unhappy with my Norton and McAfee (one of each came loaded on one of each of two computers). Rather than pay the big bucks for it, he gave me a seller on Ebay for it, and I’ve been extremely happy with it.

Just discovered I had the same problem with Ad-Aware, took “Nick’s” suggestion and upgraded! Thanks for the heads up!

I’ve used it for a few years and have been very happy. Have used Norton and McAfee in the past and Trend seems to load much faster and doesn’t draw the resources that the others do, so gives you a little better performance.

I just switched to Trend Micro from McAfee (which I hated). So far so good

I switched from Trend to McAfee not long ago. Trend worked great for awhile, then wouldn’t pick up the simplest adware or virus’. Had McAfee way back when and it sucked, but it seems to be much better now, and is free with Comcast!

Some things I’ve noticed since Trend stopped showing on my computer. My email acct. no longer separates spam from regular email and the tool bar I had to manually separate them is gone. Maybe they aren’t related. I work 90% of the time on a Mac, so I don’t profess to be an educated PC guy.

The other thing I’ve noticed is when I create a new window in my internet explorer, that window takes longer than it should to load. Sometimes minutes. Once the window loads, it’s not a problem. I can bring up sites as quick as my DSL will allow.

I’ve tried installing the newest version of Adaware and got an error with that too.
