Slot limits – where to get a list of lakes?

I headed to a local lake to do a little spearing early Saturday morn. I drove 40 minutes to get to the landing – and saw the “experimental regulations” sign declaring a large protected slot for pike – effectively eliminating the lake from spearing. That is fine – but it is getting frustrating having this happen. There are tons of lakes that have special regs in place that are not listed in the synopsis – instead they are posted at the landing. It makes it tough to plan a day or weekend of fishing. This is the third time this season that we had to change plans in the AM after driving to a lake. It really cuts into the actual fishing time!

Does anyboy know if there is a list available of lakes with special restrictions? I can only find the lakes listed in the synopsis on the DNR website – and it barely scratches the surface.

I’m not sure if they are listed anywhere, but what I have done in the past is just emailed someone from DNR fisheries in the area you plan to fish with your question. I have always received a quick response with the answers to my questions.

The list in the synopsis is only a small fraction of the actual lakes with special experimental regs in place. There are many lakes with special slots in place that are only indicated by a yellow sign at the landing indicating the slot. It is getting tiring wasting a Saturday morning driving to a lake to find out it is protected by a slot, only to have to drive to another lake to fish.

Really??? I find that hard to believe unless the regs are newly added. also, don’t forget that they will sometimes post rules that they are considering for a lake.

Give me an example lake, if they are doing this, they should get that lake in the regs book…

Pelican Lake at Orr, MN is a perfect example. The regs in the Synopsis read “24-32 inch pike must be returned….” After a 45 minute drive there on opening day, the sign says “24-38 must be returned” They expanded the protection by 6 inches! That is a big change that is NOT listed in the synopsis.

The lake I went to this weekend is NOT LISTED in the synopsis – but there is a “24 to 36” protected slot posted at the landing. This is VERY common. There are lots of lakes with experimetal regs that are NOT LISTED in the synopsis. PM me for details if interested. I would rather not post lake specific info here.

That’s too bad, there really should be a centralized up to date list on their site.

Timmy hasn’t posted it here but it seems that Pelican has old signage and the other lake he was talking about had an unofficial slot limit posted by a local angler.

So, as far as I can tell, the regs are complete and up to date except maybe on lakes like Mille Lacs where they may change based on fishing success…

    NSD is correct.

The Pelican sign was an old sign that was missed in the update. The small local lake had a sign that some sneaky local must have ‘acquired’ and posted…….to keep his honey-hole to himself….
