Laptop, DrDepth and Humminbird 997 out mapping

Its really to late to get into mapping this year but I wanted to try the laptop running DrDepth from that Humminbird 997 I got this summer. Fantastic. I ran on the grid lines set up in DrDepth and with the side scan set to 100′ each side it let me see every thing between the lines. Man was it neat. Every bump or hump out there showed up before I ever got to it on the next line. This let me run a quick loop so when the program made the map it knew exactly where what ever started.

The lake is wild, 35, 50 or 60 feet deep and boom it came up shallow out of no where, say 5 to 10 foot shallow.

It ended up so windy later in the afternoon I finally decided I was wet enough with white cap spray splashing me so I kicked back.

Some body I’ll not name was giving me grieve about all the different colors of paints on my boat. So I used a couple left over cans of paint I had to see how well they’d stick. Hippie boat, now thats just plain mean spirited I used the yellow, red and gray for safety to help people see me.

I’ll try and post some of the side scan screen captures on my web site later. Different. No fish houses or boats this time though.

Thanks Nick. I posted some side scan oddities from Clearwater Lake on the site this evening you might find interesting. Not sure what some of them are yet. Maybe camera time again.

been playing with DrDepth and the data I collected the other day. Here’s a 3D image I saved some of you might like. If it isn’t full size, clicking on it will bring it up.
The program would let me rotate it to any angle I want and on a faster machine it’d make the 3D as I went along collecting data.

DrDepth is an amazing tool. I use mine like Warren in the boat. When I go to new lakes I have to motor over the structure to understand it anyway. But DrDepth collects data at the same time and then I create the map to see what it really looks like. I have practiced mapping in my head for years and but I forget many things if I don’t go back to that lake for a few years. Now it is permanently saved. My thanks to Warren for getting me started.
