Well, I had the opportunity to spend this past weekend with some buddies of mine up on the Rainy River. We had seven guys and three boats for the trip. A few IDA members, Bobberal,Hawglbr and Taztyke, were part of the group with me. We headed up on Thursday afternoon and drove in pouring rain the whole trip. We weren’t looking forward to a day of rain on Friday, but that is what we got to wake up to and fish in all day. The fishing was pretty good for the most part. The walleyes kept us going without any long voids. We were on the water around 9:30 (late due to the rain) and we were done with our 28 eyes by 2:30pm. Friday didn’t produce any big fish other than a few large sturgeons, biggest being around 50″, but it was a blast anyway. The largest eye Friday was at 19-1/4″ and all the eyes on Friday were right at the 17″-19″ mark – perfect eaters!
We returned to the cabin and we were frying fish and having a few at 5:30 and full of fish at around 6:30. Life couldn’t have been any better!
Saturday we woke early to clear skies and cooler temps. We were on the water around 7:30 and after the rain on Thursday and Friday the current was a flowin’!! We had a tougher time with the eyes on Saturday, mainly due to the grass and leaves in the water that found our jigs all day. We managed to finish what we needed to fill up our limits early and fish a few hours for some piggies, but none were had. We were back to the cabin around 6:30 after a quick celebration stop at the Muni in Baudette!
The biggest walleye came in on my line on Saturday and it was a very healthy 25″ piggy! All of the walleyes were very healthy and heavy. Wish I could be back there this weekend but the new wife has other plans for me!
I hope anyone heading up to Rainy has the luck we had, the water temps are only getting better! Good luck
