I was wondering that myself…. It would be impossible to fish from an unattended fish house, IMHO.

So much for setting up 2 tip ups in my clam and just walking awy from it I guess. What if I have an elaborate and expensive wireless camera sytem set up in my clam so I can view it. than is it unatended?

It is a hard pill to swallow when the surrounding states take advantage of the resources they have with high license fees, however MN does not charge these states the same fees for our resources. Would this be a big hit to IA guys coming to MN, yes, but no worse then if I want to hunt deer in IA.

Last year or the year before, MN charged IA bowhunters in MN the same fees, and you would think we took their birthdays. Yes it is expensive, but IMHO, the IA DNR made their bed, we should make them sleep in it. It sucks that it impacts you, but it sucks more that it impacts me.

Could not have said it better. When I started deer hunting in Iowa in 1989, it was $100 dollars for a deer license and now it is $450. I can not believe anyone would urine and moan about $3.50. That’s about 20 miles in my truck. Our great state is still the best bargain in the Midwest for pricing and fishing opportunities.

here is a link the the actual Minnesota statute regarding shelters on ice. It is pretty straight forward…
    Minnesota State Statute

Is this the New updated Law?

If it is Retractable wheel houses would be exempt if you are occupying it and a Standard house would be except if you didn’t leave on the ice unattended?

Minnesota could elimeinate a lot of this state to state garbage by simply applying a reciprocity rule: If you are a non-resident who’s state gets 450.00 for a non-res deer license, that’s what you’ll be required to pay here for on. If your state requires non-res hunters to apply in a lottery, so the same goes here in MN.

Fishing should get the same benefit.

If anyone from another state is carping about Mn’s licensing costs, I say they have at least three other directions they can travel to find relief.

As far as I can interpret the portable shack rule, as long as I am not in the shack after dark and the shack has stayed on the ice, it needs the license. If I am in the shack, it needs none.

Three directions and they all work nicely. Just take up more room in the wallet. I wouldn’t care one bit if MN keeps raising fees, so I’m not complaining about license fees, just asking where does it stop? And yes if it costs non Iowa residents a bunch to hunt deer in Iowa, it should cost the same for non Minnesota residents the same to hunt deer in Minnesota. I always thought the shack permit was a bit of a joke for portables, and nonresidents paid about 3 times more for a nonres sticker, and the day after walleye season ended we would have to run out and get a new one for the following year. When talking with DNR people on the ice they, for the most part, were not too strict regarding the permit placement, as long as you had it with you. Do we still need to identify the owner of a portable with personal info along with a DNR number?
