    Hey guys,

I’m looking for a good book on training house/companion dogs. We’re planning on getting a great dane in the spring, so I’d like to start getting my ducks in a row. With a big dog, kennel training, obedience, and walking on a leash will obviously be very important. What are some good reads?

Google Richard Wolters, I used his book to train my hunting dog, he also has one that relates to house/family dogs

Checkout Leerburg Kennels. The guy is mainly a German Shepherd person, but has tons of info on raising and training a dog.

You might also search on Patricia McConnell. She is a great trainer.

Also, Chris Wild, the founder of the Third Way. Her stuff is not cheap, but she has helped me with my German Sheherd, and her advice has been great.

Finally, it is great to hear you are willing to do a bit of research before you get the dog. It is important.

Let me know if you want a Great Dane profile and I will either post or mail to your E Mail address.

If you obtain a copy of Training Your Retriever,by James Lamb Free, you will be set.The first several chapters are devoted to the eight basic obedience commands that can be applied to any dog.You can disregard the retriever portion of the book or it would look COOL to see a Dane taking hand signals for a blind retrieve!!

    Good luck with the pup.

Great Danes are usually pretty mild tempered. Just make sure you have suitable means to keep them in the yard… they scare the heck out of the neighborhood kids when they chase them down(even when they are pups). Make sure you can spend ample time with the dog and it will be fine.

My neighbors had one when I was a kid. I never saw the dog until it chased me on the way to the school bus. Darn dog barked at me, then chased me down and tackled me like a linebacker and proceeded to lick me??? It was less than a year old, but still full size.

I missed the bus that morning, I had to go back home and change my clothes

I don’t think it will get to hunt, but dock-jumping is in it’s future
