Just wondering if anyone has an idea what kind of gas mileage a 99 chevy 4wd with a 5.3L would get?? I have heard as low as 9-10 and found that hard to believe but maybe any body have one?? Thanks in advance!

15 to maybe 17 highway, 11-12 towing. I have had 2 of the newer Chevys, both were very similar.
October 17, 2007 at 12:27 am #617233I had a 99 4wd extended cab step side 1500 Silverado with the 5.3 that got right around 16 mpg average. A little better on the highway a little worse in town. It got around 12 pulling a boat.
October 17, 2007 at 12:39 am #617241Had a 99 and got 17 – 18 on the highway and around 13 – 14 pulling a load. It’s an easy decision, Ford or Dodge would be 3-4mpg less!!
October 17, 2007 at 12:49 am #617244I have a 2000 with the 5.3 and I also get around 18 and 14 pulling a boat.

ditto here 2
same as above with unleaded. It is less with blended gasOctober 17, 2007 at 1:32 am #617265On the remarks of fuel milage ..
Get rid of your heavy worthless stock muffler and replace it with a XP Performance stainless steel body muffler from MagnaFlow and you pick up a minuim(sp) of 2 MPG and and gain a little lowend power but will will pick up a tinsh of tone untill speed levels out, then it goes away.
PEOPLE I KID YOU NOT ON THIS… Best $140 you will ever spend on your truck..I used to work at a Exhaust Pros and sold a ton of them with ZERO complaints.Just food for thought
JeffOctober 17, 2007 at 2:10 am #617286Have the exact truck. 99 chev silverado ext. cab 4×4 5.3l vortec, z71, with the LT package. I have been getting 19 to 20 on highway, 17 around town, and 13 to 14 while towing a 18′ G3. I cant complain at all with that.

I have the same truck in a 95 with the 5.7 350, I get about the same gas mileage as quoted above. One thing that I found that makes a huge difference is if I keep the RPM’s at 2000 or lower. On a trip to the pond from Rochester pulling my boat I would drive 65 to 70 and easily burn up a tank of gas. This year my first trip up to the pond I tried an experiment and locked in the cruise at 55 and only used a half tank of gas and it did not take me that much longer to get there.
October 17, 2007 at 12:00 pm #617333can you send me a link to this? I bought a truck that needs a new exhaust system. Apparently the guy cut the stock one off at the manifold and put glass packs on. his weld job didn’t hold up so now I’ve got the thing wired up and it needs to be replaced. thanks for your help
October 17, 2007 at 4:43 pm #617423You guys make me miss my 98 suburban with the 5.7 … It would actually get about 20 hwy, 15 pulling the boat.
Now I drive a jeep and get 16-20 hwy, and 20 pulling the boat Go figure.. the thing eats less gas pulling a trailer(within reason)
October 17, 2007 at 6:04 pm #617442I’ve got a 98 GMC ext cab with the 305 motor, and on the hiway it’ll get around 18mph. Pulling the Crestliner, it’s around 12.

October 18, 2007 at 12:38 am #617537i am not sure what size motor i have in my truck. but i get HORRIBLE gas mileage for what i should be getting.but i have a 99 ranger v6 and i am luckyif i can get 15 highway. i dont hot rod it or anything i average about 13 not pulling anything. that sucks
October 18, 2007 at 12:54 am #617543I have this truck with a 175k + miles. I get 17 MPG when I set the cruise at 60. Anything over 65 and it severely drops off. When pulling anything I’m also down to the 12 MPG range.
