Duramax help??

I bought a 05 duramax about 2 months ago and have had no problems up to last night. The truck started fine and ran normal down the highway and through town; as soon as I was turning on the interstate, it seems to loose power and pulsates right at 2000 rpms. The only way I can explain it is like it had a rev limiter. If I kept it at 1900 it would shift just fine and act like nothing was wrong…as soon as I kicked it down she would downshift and start all the pulsating/hesitation all over again. I pulled over several times letting it idle in park…. shutting it off for a while….still started and ran like a champ, right up to 2000 rpms. I did finally get it up to 65mph(obviously being extremely gutless). Thinking that maybe it was something with the tranny, when I got home I put it in park and reved it up…..still only 2000 rpms…..ok….not a tranny problem…..what next……thinking its electrical …..censor….most likely.

Now here is the part the really gets me…This morning I get up start it up…..rev the crap out of it….seems just fine …..If I have trouble with anything, I want it to be constant. It’s a lot easier to show someone rather than explain. I Had the wife follow me to work….not a problem…..How do I expain this one to the dealer without it costing me my first born…I can’t believe I’m the first one to have this problem…anyone know where I should start as far as giving the dealer a few ideas? Any help would be great. Thanks

Sounds like your computer is acting up or your turbo is having some issues. I would get it checked out ASAP.

If the salesman told me the truth, it was changed the day before I picked it up which would mean right now it has 4000 miles on it….I am going to change it tomorrow just in case….

Not knowing how many miles on your fuel filter, this would limit rpm by restricting fuel flow. Thats an easy fix. A dealer can see if it threw any codes.

Does it have a power enhancing box on it? If it does the first thing I would do is unplug it and road test it again, we see some problems with after market performance products at the dealer I work at. If not like they’ve said, fuel filter replacement would be recomened. There should be a code in the controller if their a faulty componet, but would be best if you could duplicate it when you take it to the dealer. You should also drain you filter to make sure no water is in your fuel. Good Luck

like everyone else said sounds like a fuel filter. in our ready mix trucks they will run fine and rev fine until you get into 5-8 gear then they will act like the turbo is gone no power and shutter, change the fuel filter and presto good as new.

I own a Duramax. Fuel filters and air filter are crucial for the diesel engines. Change the fuel filter every 15k and air filter every 10-15k. Sounds like it is starving for fuel.

I drained the filter this morning and it looks like all fuel….no water….I’m still leaning towards fuel problem, but wouldn’t I still be having problems….I can hold her to the wood and smoke the tires all day. Since that night I have been trying to get it to do it again and can’t. It also bothers me that it was exactly at 2000 rpms. There was nothing “out of rythm” when it was pulsating/sputtering….it was just like it was governed. I’m taking it to the dealer tonight so I’ll keep you guys posted…thanks for the help….sure love this site….

Dang sorry never thought of this. My buddy has an 02 duramax and told me he keeps one all the time in his tool box for that problem. He goes through 3 fuel filters every 10,000 miles.

I have an 06 duramax and only change the filter every 15,000 miles and have no problems with it.

I would say the waste gate on the turbo is plugged or was not opening. I don’t think it is a fuel issue but a turbo issue. If that was the case it should have put a code in the ECM that would tell the dealer that it was a waste gate. It can happen at anytime and incrimently like that. Take it in and have them look at it, hopefully it is still under warranty. Most dealers will push a Diesel drivability issue to the top of the list. That is one of the benifits of owning them.

Post on here what it was when you figue it out so it can help others in the future.

I just called my brother who is a diesel mechanic because this was kind of irritating me and he said what most everyone here has said is right. Change your fuel filter he said. First thing he said when i read your post to him.

I bought the filter tonight will put it in tomorrow..I also emailed a bunch of different diesel guys to see what they say… I am going to have the dealer hook it up to his computer anyways to see if there was any error codes. No matter what I will keep everyone posted over this comming week. If I get any good info from my long list of emails I will pass them along….

No demo’s here, just a ’96 Impala, last of the big ones.

There was a guy from the Northfield area 20 years ago by the nickname Jigger, his name is Steve Jarstad, thought that was maybe you.
