I have a 4 month old son at home, and want to start his college fund. Looking to hear what others are, or have done. I want a decent return, but not really high risk. Stocks? Bonds? or is there a tax free account like a Roth out there for college. I plan to speak to my tax man, but want all the ideas I can get. Thanks in advance all.

Go to http://www.savingforcollege.com. For most cases I recommend a 529plan. There are many out there Wisconsin has one you even get a tax break for it. As long as it is used for college expenses(loosely defined) it will come out tax free/ grow tax free. This is a start. Good luck.

Have a talk with a financial advisor. Where do you live?

529 made the most sense for my two little ones. Talk to a financial advisor to get you started.

As mentioned above, the 529 plan is the way to go. You, as the owner, retain control of the fund yet it considered a completed gift for estate tax purposes.

Growth is tax deferred and if used for qualifying college expenses, is tax free. Some states have tax incentives to invest in their state plan.

    Man, are you mis-informed.

I have a pair of 529 plans as well….with Ed Vest, which is the WI state-sponsored plan. One benefit you can reap now with Ed Vest is the state income tax deduction, I think it’s up to $3000 per year that you can deduct, dollar for dollar, for contributions to your kid’s plan.
