I was awaken at around 2:30 a.m. this morning by a strong thunder roar. I checked out my Weatherbug on the computer and notice storms building along the Wis. Min. border so I put the camera on my tripod and headed to the end of the driveway to take some lightning shots! It was quite the show. Everytime I’d set up on where I thought it would lightning I’d light up the sky in a different area.
I still got a few good shots I’d like to share. I know a few people like to see what I got!

It has to be very difficult to get shots of lightning

Those could have been right over my house. Usually I’m able to sleep through any storm. However last night it sounded like the thunder was coming from my living room. Nice shoots I’m with Blue for my favorite picture. The clouds in that shot look great.

I’ve had a few scary moments with this adrenaline rush hobby of mine! Last wednesday night for instance, I took a picture of this lightning bolt…to bad the bolt ended up going right over my head and behind me. Time to head inside boys!

Awesome shots, I agree on the favorite, although they are all good. Do you care to share any of your technigue, shuter speed, ISO, etc. timing of the shots?

    No problem….

Make sure you have a sturdy tripod for starters! You need a camera that you can set to manual settings. I do not yet own a cable release for taking my lightning shots set my cameraat bulb setting on shutter speed. Most people think that you need to shoot at high shutter speed when actually you go the opposite way. You set your camera shutter to stay open to capture the lightning. I will usually set my shutter for 20 to 30 seconds. Shutter will stay open for that time period before closing. Any lightning flashes appearing in the 30 second period will show up in your picture.

I try and find an area that has the most lightning activity and set up my tripod and camera facing that area. Since you are shooting in manual mode you need to find a light off in the distance to focus your lense on before taking pixs. If not you will have pixs that are out of focus. Another thing that need to set on your digital is the ISO speed as low as possible…which in my case with my Canon D20 would be ISO.100….

Then set your aperture around 5.6 or 6.3 making the picture darker to show the lightning bolts better. I try and set my manual zoom on my lense as close to the lightning area to show more definition in the lightning bolts!

I’ve found that the best shots are the cloud to ground lightning shots. I love the spiderweb looking lightning the best, but since it usually covers the whole sky it’s hard to take pixs of with out a wide view lense. There now you know how! If you still have any more questions on how to take them…just give me a holler!

I was thinkin bout this last night,we had another round of boomers and flashes. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to “aim” the camera. When I look through the viewer on mine all I see is pitch black,I could be aimin straight at the ground for all I know.
Don’t you worry about the rain ruining the camera? My Mrs was chewin on me for setting foot outside with the camera in a storm and as much as I hate to admit it she had a point.

Thanks for all the details. I’ll have to give it a try some time, I’ve got the equipment. I’m kind of a wanna bee photographer and just enjoy tying those things. Like Jeff, says do you do anything to protect the camera, I’d hate to mess it up.

I hate to tell you that once it starts raining I’m headin to the house. I use to own a truck with a fiberglass lid over the box and would lay in the back of the truck taking pixs, but not anymore. The trick is you need to get pictures of appoaching storms or storms that are just off in the distance. One reason for this is after it starts raining the lightning is pretty much blurry from the rain coming down around the lightning. I’ve had some luck at taking pictures of lightning after the storm passes, but most of them have lingering showers that make also tough.
Let know how your luck at it goes. I’ll help you as much as I can.
What do you have for equipment?????
