No problem….
Make sure you have a sturdy tripod for starters! You need a camera that you can set to manual settings. I do not yet own a cable release for taking my lightning shots set my cameraat bulb setting on shutter speed. Most people think that you need to shoot at high shutter speed when actually you go the opposite way. You set your camera shutter to stay open to capture the lightning. I will usually set my shutter for 20 to 30 seconds. Shutter will stay open for that time period before closing. Any lightning flashes appearing in the 30 second period will show up in your picture.
I try and find an area that has the most lightning activity and set up my tripod and camera facing that area. Since you are shooting in manual mode you need to find a light off in the distance to focus your lense on before taking pixs. If not you will have pixs that are out of focus. Another thing that need to set on your digital is the ISO speed as low as possible…which in my case with my Canon D20 would be ISO.100….
Then set your aperture around 5.6 or 6.3 making the picture darker to show the lightning bolts better. I try and set my manual zoom on my lense as close to the lightning area to show more definition in the lightning bolts!
I’ve found that the best shots are the cloud to ground lightning shots. I love the spiderweb looking lightning the best, but since it usually covers the whole sky it’s hard to take pixs of with out a wide view lense. There now you know how! If you still have any more questions on how to take them…just give me a holler!
