Packers\’ Farm Report
The Packers designated Robert Ferguson for assignment to their
triple-A affiliate on Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings. There he will
join former big leaguers Darren Sharper and Ryan Longwell, as well as
former stars of the single-A Wisconsin Badgers Brooks Bollinger,
Erasmus James, their head coach Brad \”Chili\” Childress, and OC Darrell
Bevell.
Ferguson sounded relieved upon hearing of his demotion even with the
paycut, saying \’It was pretty tough competing against the other wide
receivers on the Packers. I was fighting to be the 5th wideout on the
roster, and wasn\’t getting many reps. But in Minnesota, I\’m the #1
option.\’
Chili agreed, noting \’Darrell and I a pretty excited to incorporate
Robert into our kick-az offense. It\’s not often where you\’ll see
talent li ke this in the minors, let alone combining it with a couple of
coaching legends like Darrell and I. Let\’s not forget Darrell was the
captain of a Rose Bowl victory with the single-A club under my
tutelage.
There were thoughts of Ferguson being demoted all the way down to the
double-A Houston Texans to be reunited with his former coach Mike
Sherman. Houston is littered with former members of the big club like
Mike Flanagan, Samkon Gado, and Ahman Green as well as single-A call
ups Ron Dayne and Jamar Fletcher.
In the end though, the Vikings won out for Ferguson\’s services. \’It
really is a testament to the Packers organization\’, said Chili, \’they
have so much talent, but only so many roster spots, we\’re fortunate to
be the beneficiaries.\’ Chili also sounded excited about the end of
August when the Packer\’s preseason ends. \’We\’ll probably add 2 or 3
more players when the Packers have to cut down to 53. I can\’t wait!\’\”
