With the fall bite coming upon us, I am looking into purchasing a rod for pitching jigs. I was just wondering what lengths, actions and brands work best for this method of fishing. Any input will be greatly appreciated for it will save alot of doubt about my purchase. By the way I will be fishing for walleye.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Mikey

I second fish2live’s choice. I’m pretty sure I feel most of the taps (or thuds) when pitching rip-rap for eye’s.

I just went to a St. Croix, I think it is 6’8″ or 6’9″ x-fast tip this Spring and it has really made me a better jig fisherman. The sensitive of the rod is unbelievable. I wasn’t bad at pitching before but the rod has really upped my game. I can’t wait for the Fall bite to begin!

Ditto on the St. Croix 6’8″ medium xfast. I have the tourney elite but the Avid would be great as well. Super sensitive tip but solid backbone. The little extra length helps in current. Alot of stores have St. Croixs on clearance right now and I have seen them as much as 25% off.

I am using two rods right now, depending on the weight of the jig I’m working.

1/16 oz jigs, maybe up to 1/8, with crawler halves, leeches or minnows: St Croix Legend Tournament 7’6″ MLF. Great long rod for pitching light jigs a long way, plenty of backbone for smallies and eyes. Also great for dragging.

Heavier than 1/8, or for plastics: St Croix Legend Tournament 6’8″ MXF. Great all around jig pitching rod. So-so for dragging, I appreciate a rod with more length to get those lines away from the boat a little more.

My two rods that are always next to me are my MLF 6’9″ St. Croix Avid and my 7’MLF XMLti. Two great rods but very different Mikey, do not forget that as good as your rod is it is going to be VERY important that you match that rod with the correct reel I pair my two go-to-rods with Shimano Stradic and a Shimano Symetre reels.

St. Croix AS68MXF with mono, or AS69MLXF with fireline.

I would go with a St Croix!

Mike go talk to Dean at Everts he will let you try A rod out. The sensativity in these rods make a huge differnce with my hook up %!!!

Thank you guys for all the input, it looks like the st croix 6’8″mxf might be a good place to start. I should probably go to Dean and try one out first, good suggestion Brian.

    Thanks again,

    Mike

Looks like a St. Croix 6’8″ MXF might be the rod of choice for pitching jigs. I’m looking for a rod I can use for casting jigs and crankbaits. What would be a good compromise for both jigs and crankbaits if I could only get one rod?

Save a few more months and get two different rods There is not going to be a rod that will properly present both jigs and cranks in a way that you will be pleased with. My $.02
