Haha, another ambassaduer reel problem. Man are those reels junk. I have had 2 of those reels break on me and then had them fixed, but they keep breaking, so I don’t know if its worth it.

I’ve had my 2 6500’s for over 10 years now and never had a problem, but I also grease mine every year.

    What Bill said.

I’ve heard the 6500’s weren’t very reliable too. I bought one 3 years ago and it’s been doing well. It does get the once over every winter. They don’t like sand for sure.

I would check into the cost of repair.

i don’t think the gears are shot. Take off the cap on the opposite side of the handle. then on the cap you took off -in the center, there will be a hole/cup. put some oil in there. that will take care of the screaching sound. or if you are on the water and this does happen, dunk it in the water(saw a guide do this). then clean it and oil it when you get home.

I’ll tell you one thing. Don’t send it into Abu. I made that mistake and the repair cost me almost 75% of what a brand new one would have cost me.

They are junk, would buy a different one and forget about those, unless you wanna throw bass lure w/ the abu.

I’ve also had very good luck with my 6500’s. There is guy that advertises in Musky Hunter my brother has used and was happy with.

It is called Sportsman’s Repair Shop, 1007 Pasha Ave., Mosinee, Wi 54455. http://www.sportsmansrepair.com 715-693-6634

    good luck.

Take the reel apart and oil it.. follow the earlier instructions to do that. The screeching will go away.

Minnetonka Outdoors does reel cleaning for about $20 the last I checked.. they will take it completely apart and go through it with a tooth brush(literally) and it will work as good or better than new. Very fast turn around.

Abu Reels are good reels and well worth a few bucks to fix.

I just had 5 of my baitcasting reels serviced by John Walter (as mentioned in an earlier post) Johns Tackle Service at 507-775-6406 in Byron, Mn. $14 per reel and they came back as smooth as when they were new 18 years ago. He goes through everything and cleans them down to the shine. Then you get them back with grease where there’s suppose to be grease, oil where there’s suppose to be oil and dry where they’re suppose to be dry. My spinning reels are going there this fall.
