I am heading up to the tower area next month around the 15th for a wedding. I have not been up in that area in over 20 years and thought I could mix some fishing with the wedding as this will be a long weekend for me from work anyway.

Does anyone have any idea’s as to someplace I could stay with my boat along? I am hoping for something akin to the milac’s resorts where you can leave your boat in the water at the lodge your staying at. I am hoping for something close to Tower, the wedding is in biwabek<sp??> about 25 miles from tower.

Hoping for something under $150 a night, I really just need a bed and a shower, nothing super fancy. I have just started looking around, thought I would toss this out to everyone here to start with.

Tips, pointers, ideas about things to do and see besides fishing also would be great, I toured the sudan mine, and the tower mine when I was in the area in High school. Would not mind seeing that again. Not sure what else is up there just yet.

    Thanks for any ideas!!

I think Pike Bay Lodge may fit the bill for you. As far as other things to do – you could drive into Ely and have lunch and go through some of the shops – if you like the canoe/natural theme. Otherwise there is the 4-wheeler playground near Gilbert if you have those machines and would rather ride than fish. There are grouse around to chase, if you that’s more up your alley, and if you prefer something bigger there are plenty of bears too. You may be too early for fall colors, but I think they run the lift to the top of Giants Ridge ski area near Biwabik for a great overlook. There is the golfing at Giants Ridge too and great mountain biking and actually a paved bike trail running out of Biwabik for some secluded road biking. Mostly though there are trees and rocks and more trees and rocks. Vermillion is definitely the big gem up there in my mind. If I was staying on the lake, I would take advantage of every hour I could possibly be out there. Hope that helps.

    Wallgeye,
We used to vacation on Vermilion for about 20 years while I was growing up and have stayed at several different resorts, campgrounds, and such.

Daisy Bay resort is a resort with docks that you can leave your boat in the water. They have community docks but also have cabins with private docks for very reasonably priced. Also, Moccasin Point is a campground that has dock systems there for all the campers. This place has campsites with plugins of water and electricity if you had a camper.

Also, Fortune Bay Casino I believe has lodging with docks that you get a boat slip with your room?

THe smallies and muskies should be prime right now up there! Good luck!

Bayview has motel type units and plenty of dock space. They also have a bar and restaurant and is not too far off 169. The casino is a good option too, hotel rooms, nice campground and a full marina.
