There is a fair amount of muskie gear on craigslist.org

    in the sporting goods section!!

When doing a search make sure to try both spellings.

    Musky and Muskie

Early pre-season shows and swap meets are a great way to pick up tackle for less too.

I sold some stuff earlier this year but wouldn’t you know it? Some of those lures became “hot” and I had to repurchase a couple I sold! Figures!

I went through this same scenario. IMO if you are just getting started you are better off buying about 6 lures and just learning how to use them effectivly in the proper location. Don’t get me wrong, if you find a great deal on some used gear go ahead and snap it up. But I would suggest having a jointed depth raider for trolling, a mepps bucktail, another larger bucktail, a hog wobbler and a a nice dog walking bait. Every muskie fisherman has their go to bait and buying tackle is just like a disease, before you know it you will have alot of gear and when your in your boat you fing yourself using those same go to baits. I think for beginners learning location and how a ski will transition and react to bait presentaion is more important than having 300 lures. Just have a few go to baits and catch some fish then worry about having enough tackle.

    I would add a Jake/Grandma for casting/trolling and a Bull Dawg.

I have a brand new Jake I can sell you and I have some other lures I would part with if you want to stop by sometime. I’ll sell you whatever I have for 1/2 price off of new if in good shape.

Tell me where you’re going to fish if you want suggestions.

I would suggest contacting me if you are looking, because I am getting out of muskie fishing and everything I have is in MINT shape. Just ask Bob Bowman on this site if you have any questions. I have rod and reel combos along with 44 lures.

This is GREAT advice! The “go to” thing can be very real and I think many guys get caught up in this. Why? Results! “It works for so and so”……….. or “It worked last time”…….. or “This time of year, this lake, THIS is what you want to do!”.

Muskie hunting can be expensive when you start tallying up totals…….. and for what? Many sneer at the $$ we spend just to get a follow!

I’ve been going through no less than a dozen lures searching out the patterns on each outing this year and outside of a trolling venture that blanked, I’ve had visible interest on every outing, on many different things.

Joe really hits the nail on the head by advising that it’s better to learn the fish! By what I’ve seen, it’s not having the magic lure. It’s finding active fish. Active fish will tell you how well you’re doing.

Last Wednesday, however, was the first time I witnessed “this lure or nothing”. I learned that I could change up color a little bit and that size wasn’t necessarily the key either, but having the same look in the water was everything. Bucktails and Mogambo trailers was the “magic”. Mepps, BucherTail, Musky Mania, Inhaler, small, “normal”, large bladed tandems………… put on the Kalins Mogambo 6″ grub as a trailer and HANG ON!

Having a variety of makes to experiment these situations should definitely be lower on the priority list. I’m a tackle junky and have been accumulating lures for about 6 years. In spite of the fun I have experimenting, I wish someone would have given me Joe’s advice 6-7 years ago.

Don’t go more than a dozen lures getting started. Seek out “go to” patterns for each style of lure/presentation for 2-3 waters you plan to fish most often. You should end up with a couple bucktails, a spinnerbait, a plastic (like BullDawg or something), a couple jerk baits, couple trolling baits, a couple topwaters (bladed/propped and torpedo), and………. maybe that’d cover it.

Good luck in your searches and may your progress be swift and fruitful!

PM me – I have a box of duplicate lures I can part with. Probably something like twenty or so lures. I can send you a list with pics.
